Dick Haymes (September 13, 1918 – March 28, 1980) was one of the most popular American male vocalists of the 1940s and early 1950s.
He was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His Irish-born mother, Marguerite Haymes (1894-1987), was a well-known vocal coach and instructor. He became the vocalist in a number of big bands, worked in Hollywood on radio and in many films throughout the forties and fifties.

Years later (1955), this act of his nearly caused his deportation to Argentina on an unrelated technicality in immigration law. During World War II, he was briefly detained at Ellis Island.
Haymes was married six times and had six children. His most famous marriages were to film actresses Joanne Dru (1941-1949) and Rita Hayworth (1953-1955). His daughter Stephanie Haymes was married to Sir Elton John's lyricist Bernie Taupin
He died in Los Angeles from lung cancer, at the age of 61.
Star Eyes
Dick Haymes Lyrics

That to me is what your eyes are,
Soft as stars in April skies are,
Tell me some day you'll fulfill
Their promise of a thrill.
Star eyes,
Flashing eyes in which my hopes rise,
Let me prove that it adores
That loveliness of yours.
All my life I've felt
Content to stargaze at the skies.
Now I only want to to melt
The stardust in your eyes.
Star eyes,
When if ever, will my lips know
If it's me for whom those eyes glow?
Makes no diff'rence where you are,
Your eyes still hold my wishing star,
Oh, star eyes, how lovely you are.
Dick Haymes's song Star Eyes is a love ballad that celebrates the beauty of a woman's eyes by comparing them to the twinkling stars in the sky. The opening lines of the song, "Star eyes, that to me is what your eyes are, soft as stars in April skies are" immediately set the tone for the romantic and dreamy mood of the song. The singer sings to his beloved, asking her to fulfill the promise of a thrill that her "star eyes" hold. He describes her eyes as flashing with hope and passion, and promises to show her his true love and devotion.
The second verse evokes the feeling of gazing up at the stars in the sky and being content with stargazing. However, the singer's perspective changes now that he has found his beloved, as he now wants to melt the stardust in her eyes instead. He wonders when he will know if her eyes truly glow for him, and concludes that it makes no difference where she is, as her eyes will always hold his wishing star. The song ends with a declaration of how lovely her "star eyes" truly are.
