Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".
His songs have been recorded by Al Jarreau, Carmen McRae, The Manhattan Transfer, and, in Brazil by Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Nana Caymmi, Lenine, João Bosco, Chico Buarque, Daniela Mercury, Ney Matogrosso, Dominguinhos, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia, Johnny Alf, and other artists. The 1988 Epic Records single, "Stephen's Kingdom", featured a guest appearance from Stevie Wonder.
In 1999, his live concert double-volume album, Ao Vivo, has sold 1.2 million copies and the song, "Acelerou" became the Best Brazilian song of the year at 2000 Latin Grammy Awards.

Andaluz
Djavan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Luz do dia abacate e mel
Cheiro de haxi
Tarde de frio
Beija-flor, flores na varanda se transam
Sombra de luz
Ui de amor frugal, casa azul
Vigiai governador
Porque o povo, virgem Maria!
Sai da janela se quer sonhar
Vem pra cama
Deus lhe fez viver
Pra me querer amor
Quase dois mil
Salvaria a arara azul
O circo é orfei
Vai lua, é dia
Deixa vir os raios de sol
Tens a noite
Longe de mim
Sevilha incensa o ar andaluz
Babalaó, olorum, alá, dalai-lama
Vigiai governador
Porque o povo, virgem maria!
Sai da janela se quer sonhar
Vem pra cama
Vem pra ca pra voce ver
O que é bom pra voce
Montes au ginkgo
Plein de rameaux
Viens dõici soup'onner des oiseaux
Qui ne volent pas
Viens tu voler
Je voyage partout
The lyrics of Djavan's song Andaluz capture moments of beauty and sensuality amidst a surreal landscape. The first verse establishes a mood of warmth and relaxation, describing a lazy afternoon with the sweet scent of avocados and honey and the lingering aroma of hashish. The image is enhanced by the use of the word "haxi", an alternative, more exotic spelling of "hashish". The reference to "tarde de frio" provides a subtle contrast to the overall tone of the verse, suggesting a hint of melancholy or loneliness that adds a layer of complexity to the scene.
The second verse introduces new elements that further enrich the song's surreal atmosphere. The first line - "Beija-flor, flores na varanda se transam" - describes a hummingbird and flowers intertwined, a metaphor for an intimate encounter. The line that follows - "Sombra de luz" - is a contradiction in terms that creates a sense of confusion and disorientation. The third line introduces the phrase "Ui de amor frugal", which can be translated as "oh, meagre love". This phrase adds a touch of irony to the lyrics, suggesting that even in moments of passion and romance, there is a sense of disappointment or inadequacy that cannot be fully overcome. The final lines of the verse allude to various religious and spiritual figures - Babalaó, Olorum, Alá, and the Dalai Lama - adding an air of mysticism to the imagery.
Overall, Djavan's Andaluz is a song that defies easy interpretation, using its surreal imagery and unconventional phrasing to create a mood of dreamlike beauty and complexity.
