Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".

Lambada de Serpente
Djavan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Que demora na semente
Meu pai disse: meu filho
Noite fria, tempo quente
Lambada de serpente
A traição me enfeitiçou
Quem tem amor ausente
Já viveu a minha dor
Um lamento de corrente.
Um grão de pé de guerra
Prá colher dente por dente
Lambada de serpente
A traição me enfeitiçou
Quem tem amor ausente
Já viveu a minha dor
The lyrics of Djavan's song Lambada De Serpente describe a deep sense of betrayal and the pain that comes with it. The opening lines, "Cuidar do pé de milho que demora na semente" (Taking care of the corn that takes time to sprout), suggest the importance of patience, which is a common theme throughout the song. The singer's father advises him that "noite fria, tempo quente" (cold nights, hot weather), or difficult times, will come and go.
The chorus, "Lambada de serpente a traição me enfeitiçou" (The serpent's lambada enchanted me with betrayal), refers to the lambada, a Brazilian dance style originating in the Amazon region, which is associated with betrayal and unfaithfulness. The metaphor of the serpent is used to represent deceit and treachery. The singer's pain is palpable as he laments, "Quem tem amor ausente já viveu a minha dor" (Those who have experienced absent love have already lived my pain).
The final lines, "Do chão da minha terra um lamento de corrente. Um grão de pé de guerra prá colher dente por dente" (From the ground of my land, a lament of chain. A seed of war to reap tooth for tooth), express the desire for justice and revenge. The singer wants to fight back, to ultimately right the wrongs that have been done to him.
