After several years of digging each other's music, touring together in Cana… Read Full Bio ↴After several years of digging each other's music, touring together in Canada, the US & Europe, and becoming great friends, Don Ross and Andy McKee have decided to join forces for a new duo recording on Candyrat Records entitled, "The Thing That Came From Somewhere".

The new cd includes duets versions of five familiar tunes composed by each guitarist, two duet arrangements of compositions by Russell Ferrante and Mike Marshall, and two solo tracks by each of Don and Andy for a total of 11 great performances.

Don Ross has to be one of favorite artists. I think he has been the inspiration of many of the recent trends in acoustic guitar. Don, Andy Mckee, Mike Golay and Antoine Dufur have been at the top of my favs for a while now although I think I like what I've heard recently from Brooke Miller which puts the modern accoustic style to an amazing voice as well is rapidly taking first place. Those riffs sound good for me and I totaly think that it's a great source of inspiration for everyone. Don't do what poeples already heard, just create what you want and everything will sound right cause that is real inspiration. Don't play an instrument to be like everyone and play normaly, create and push the limite like Don is doing. Those harmonics are perfect :)

I've been sitting here studying this piece for a few days, and I have the fingerings down (up until the bridge), but in doing so, I've concluded fingerings are only about 20% of the battle, and that Don is the master of what I call "critical subtleties". What sounds simple sometimes ain't, and the subtleties are what make this piece come alive.

I remember just getting into Andy Mckee and learning about Don Ross in 2007 when this album came out in early 2008. I gotta say, this collaborative album was one of the best I've ever heard and will be something I'll be making my kids listen to later on. Even though they'll hate it at first (it was Gordon Lightfoot for me), they'll grow up and learn to love it just like I did.

Funny how some sounds can take you back to a place in your past. This song reminds me of my childhood times on a place called Salt Spring Island. Dunno what is it about it, but it's very calming and freeing.

Just to get people started, the first few chords are: B, B/A (B again but with an A bass note), Eadd9, Aadd9, Eadd9, repeat x2, A, B, Emaj9. Bear in mind, the chord voicings Don uses in this song are not standard, but the tuning is. Have a play with the chords see what you can find.

That is actually the "correct" way of playing... as far as being classically trained. He is most likely using a foot rest or a foot stool since that is also common in the classical world since it promotes proper posture and relieves excess stress from hunching over the guitar.

it's actually very easy to tell that guitar apart from a classical nylon string guitar. Listen to a classical and you'll hear the difference

he had me there until about the 3 min mark and then my ear got confused. the harmonics in the middle of hos riffs and bridge didn't make sense. Aside from that part. Don is a genius and I look forward to meeting him soon (pending his coming to my town................ ;) )
