The Way We Were
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Memories light the corners of my mind
Misty water-colored memories of the way we were
Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another for the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then
Or has time rewritten every line
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?

Memories may be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply choose to forget
So it's the laughter we will remember
Whenever we remember

The way we were
The way we were

Overall Meaning

In Donna Summer's song "The Way We Were," the lyrics convey a profound exploration of memories and nostalgia. The song opens with the line "Memories light the corners of my mind," which immediately sets the reflective and introspective tone. The singer reminisces about the past, describing these memories as misty water-colored images, symbolizing a blurred and dreamlike quality. These memories are represented by scattered pictures of the smiles they shared, which they left behind.

The lyrics then question whether the past was really as simple as it seemed or if time has rewritten the memories. The singer wonders if given the chance to relive those moments, would they choose to do it all over again. This sentiment reflects the universal human experience of reflection and the desire for a second chance in life.

The following lines emphasize that memories can be both beautiful and painful. The choice to remember or forget certain aspects of the past is highlighted, particularly when it becomes too painful to recall. Each time they remember, it's the laughter and positive moments they choose to hold onto as they reminisce about "the way we were."

Overall, Donna Summer's "The Way We Were" is a poignant reflection on the fleeting nature of time, the power of memories, and the bittersweet nostalgia that accompanies reminiscing about the past.

Donna turned what was already an emotionally moving classic by Bab's into an even more personally heartfelt emotionally moving classic of her own that couldn't help but leave her audience standing there in awe. I read somewhere that Donna wanted to prove that she was capable of singing more than disco so she chose TWW to do it! Not only did she prove herself, she left the audience standing there in awe with tears streaming down their cheeks!

Donna Summer was an awesome entertainer. Even if someone doesn't care for disco, there's no mistaken that she had an incredible voice. She became a successful artist during a time when there was no such thing as MTV and internet. I'm 49 years old and she's been my favorite ever since I was 10!

@pabloandrescristiancorvala7293

Donna's interpretation is by far the most inspirational. And it's live.

@MTDunn2

Donna's version of this song is my favorite. No offense Barbra, but Donna knocks it out of the park. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.

@giovannipoggi8374

Sono d'accordo.

@davielove11

Donna's voice is so pure and distinct..angelic. I can't think of another performer who sound anything like her.

@59jlopez70

This the most radiant and haunting version of the way we were. Barbra is proud of her

@christya2488

She is the single most underrated singer of all time. As a vocalist she's surpassed Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, and every other pop diva that has ever existed. They are all great, but Donna Summers had the most effortlessly powerful, beautiful voices of all time.

@mrmusicality994

I wouldn't say she surpassed them, but I'd say they are in the category... I think that who you prefer is simply your personal preference... Imo no one has been able to do this song better than Barbra HOWEVER Donna did an amazing job

@tevinheath3997

Reece D I would say that the only one that surpassed Barbara is Gladys Knight. My goodness 😭 Gladys knight try to remember incomparably great.
