Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Blues Skies
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore
Blue skies
Smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies
Bluebirds
Singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds
All day long
Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly
Blue days
All of them gone
Nothing but blue skies
From now on
I should care if the wind blows east or west
I should fret if the worst looks like the best
I should mind if they say it can't be true
I should smile, that's exactly what I do
The song Blue Skies by Doris Day is initially about the transformative power of love. The song starts by describing the singer's experience of being blue and how every day was cloudy and gray. However, good luck came knocking at her door, and now the skies are blue and smiling at her. The singer describes that she never saw the sun shining so bright and never saw things going so right before. The blue skies are a metaphor for the positive changes in her life due to love, and the bluebirds represent the happiness and positivity she feels throughout the day.
As the song progresses, the singer realizes that love not only changed her outlook on life but also her attitude towards challenges. She acknowledges that there may be windy days or difficult times, but she does not care because she's in love. She should not fret if things go wrong or if people doubt her; instead, she smiles because she knows love has given her everything she needs. The song stresses the importance of staying optimistic, even in challenging circumstances, as the blue skies and bluebirds continue to act as poetic devices, emphasizing the newfound joy in her life.
Overall, Doris Day's Blue Skies is all about the transformative power of love and how it can change the way you view the world around you. It's an uplifting tune with an important message that love is worth celebrating, and it can turn even the most difficult days into beautiful, sunny ones.
