Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

September Song
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
I'd let the old Earth make a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in lieu of pearls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around, she came
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
And you ain't got time for waiting game
When days dwindle down to a precious few
September November,
And these few golden days I'd share with you
Those golden days I share with you
When you meet with the young girls early in the Spring
You court them in song and rhyme
They answer with words and a clover ring
But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And the plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time
Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game
Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November
And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you
The lyrics of Doris Day's "September Song" tell a story about the passage of time and the fleeting nature of life. The singer reflects on his younger days when he would court the girls but would also play a waiting game. If a girl rejected him, he would patiently wait, letting time pass and hoping that she would come around eventually. As time goes by, the woman finally comes his way. The song then transitions to the second verse, where the singer contemplates the passing of the seasons and how time seems to accelerate as one reaches September. The autumn weather brings about a sense of urgency, leaving no time for playing games or waiting around.
The chorus repeats the idea that it is a long journey from May to December, with the days growing shorter as September approaches. The leaves turning to flame symbolize the vibrant and beautiful yet fleeting nature of life. The singer desires to make the most of the remaining days, acknowledging that time is running out. The song concludes with the sentiment that these few precious days will be spent with the person addressed in the song, cherishing the time they have together.

When I was a young man courting the girls
In my youth, I would pursue romantic relationships with young women
I played me a waiting game
I would patiently wait for the women's response
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
If a woman rejected me with disdain
I'd let the old Earth make a couple of whirls
I would let time pass and the world continue turning
While I plied her with tears in lieu of pearls
Instead of offering expensive gifts like pearls, I would try to win her over with tears
And as time came around she came my way
Eventually, as time passed, she reciprocated my feelings
As time came around, she came
As time passed, she became interested in me
Oh, it's a long long while from May to December
The time from spring to winter feels incredibly long
But the days grow short when you reach September
However, as we approach September, the days start to feel shorter
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
During fall, when the weather changes and leaves turn fiery colors
And you ain't got time for waiting game

The leaves of brown came tumbling down
Remember in September in the rain
The sun went down just like a dying ember
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
The raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here to me it's still September
That September in the rain
The leaves of brown came tumbling down
Remember, ahh, September in the rain
And the sun went down just like a dying amber
That September in the rain
To every word of love I heard you whisper
And the raindrops seemed to play a sweet refrain
Though spring is here to me it's still September
That September in the rain
It's still September in the rain
