Dave Thomas and Rick Moranis told the story behind these characters a lot: they’re not making fun of Americans (well, a bit, probably, but not primarily Americans), they’re making fun of Canadian content regulations. While they were making the show, a law was passed saying that all shows needed a certain percentage of distinctly Canadian content. Their response was to ask what does that even mean? The whole show is entirely Canadian! So to comply with that regulation, the decided to write a sketch where they pile every Canadian stereotype on top of each other.

AFAIK it was a misconception that Canadian beer was stronger bc they've always used ABV but it used to be alcohol by weight in America, so a lower percentage. Pretty sure 4-5% is standard for a typical lager anywhere in the world.

I used to wait for these guys to come on sctv. It was usually toward the end of the show. Then I'd fall asleep. And true story, we used to have a Moosehead beer 🍻 billboard by my house. When they plastered over it , it really bummed me out.

I was in the theater watching Brother Bear when the bear encountered the two moose-Bob and Doug eh. I laughed like a hosehead and people stared at me eh. I guess I was the only one in on the joke eh.

Back in the 80s when these bits were new, they had a small debate about the robotic arm on the space shuttle, which was made in Canada. Doug figured if it was Canadian, it had to be capable of opening a beer. Bob thought opening a beer in outer space would be a bad idea because all the beer would float upward.

It depends on which state you buy beer. Texas beer is normal with about a 5% average. Oklahoma beer is different. You can buy 3.2% beer in the grocery and convenience stores, or you can buy 5% beer in liquor stores. At least that's what I remember from a few years ago. I think I drank over a case of the 3.2 beer in one day.

Oh we got a government monopoly on booze too. It's just a monopoly by the state as opposed to the federal government. I think it's about the highest tax rate of anything sold including gasoline in all states. Heck, I even think it's taxed as high as marijuana in the states that allow it. Fortunately though we don't have state run liquor stores in Texas although some states do. The laws vary greatly. Your basic American made beers all are about 5% alcohol. Some beers have a higher alcohol content but some states won't allow beer sales in grocery/convenience stores over 3.2%. The big brewers make a special beer for the 3.2% states. It's much cheaper and they sell it in strange amounts. For instance, you can't buy a case. You must by a 30 pack. It's just weird and confusing. I think Louisiana allows beer and liquor sales in grocery stores 24 hours a day.

It reminds me of a weird city ordinance we came across. The Guadalupe river in Texas is a favorite of Texans. You rent some tubes and float the river and drink until you can't drink anymore. On Sunday morning, they apparently have a law that says you can't drink before like 11AM or something weird. We almost got tickets. I couldn't believe it. I thought the park rangers were joking. Every damned city in the US has stupid laws. Makes me want to leave. Especially since we no longer have rights and our government openly spies on us.

***** Good news, the Ontario gov'ment is going to introduce alkihal for sale in grocery stores shortly. Article in this weeks news , Ontario Province to allow sales of alcohol to loosen the monopoly grip of foreign owned 'The Beer Store". Check it out.

Alternately, beer and wine sales have been available for some time, especially micro brewers are allowed to sell their product from their premises , most like Steam Whistle are open till 11pm daily except Sunday which is usually 12pm-5pm.

Nah, most commercial Canadian beer are twist offs now. The odd micro brew still uses the pop-top caps that you need the opener for.

Actually, government has enforced 'no twist off caps' now only pop caps everywhere! Can't find a twist off anywhere in BC, because someone sued somebody over tiny broken shards from the twist offs!
