’60s-sounding Welsh blues singer Aimee Anne Duffy - known professionally as Duffy - released her debut single Rockferry in December 2007. After relocating to London in 2006, she came to the attention of Rough Trade. She is often compared to late ’60s soul diva Dusty Springfield and has experienced significant mainstream success with the single Mercy reaching #1 in the United Kingdom. The debut album, Rockferry, was released in March 2008, and also made #1 on the UK album chart. Bernard Butler of Suede worked extensively on the album, lending it an authentic and wonderfully produced lush ’60s sound.
The 24-year-old’s debut album, Rockferry, triumphed at the 2009 BRIT Awards for British Album, British Female Solo Artist, and British Breakthrough Act.

Hard for the Heart
Duffy Lyrics

Nor did I choose this face,
I never thought life would be so hard to me,
I guess it is just my face
If these walls could comfort me
They would reassure me I've been lost for so many years
If these walls could comfort me
I am looking for safety,
Whats it all about,
Want somebody to tell me,
Take away this vow
Life is a play and we all play a part,
But it often gets hard for the heart
Life is a play and we all play a part
But it often gets hard for the heart
Hard for the heart
Who ever thought I would question mortality,
This given time and space,
Who ever said we belong to society,
The only human race,
If these walls could comfort me,
They would reassure me I've been lost for so many years
If these walls could talk to me,
They would tell me I've been lost for so many years
I am looking for safety,
Oh whats it all about,
Will somebody tell me
Take away this vow,
Life is a play and we all play a part,
But it often gets hard for the heart.
Life is a play and we all play a part,
But it often gets hard for the heart.
Hard for the heart
Life is a play and we all play a part,
But it often gets hard for the heart.
Life is a play and we all play a part,
But it often gets hard for the heart.
Hard for the heart
In Duffy's song "Hard for the Heart," the lyrics describe the struggles of a person who feels trapped and lost in their own life. They never chose to be poor or have their appearance, and they never expected life to be so difficult. The person is looking for safety and seeking answers about the purpose of their existence. They question mortality and their place in society, feeling like they have been lost for many years. The walls around them serve as a comfort, but they crave more reassurance and connectivity with others.
The chorus of the song emphasizes the idea of life being like a play, with everyone playing a part. However, it can often be difficult and trying for the heart. This line represents the idea that life's roles are not always easy, and even if people are playing a part, they still feel and experience the emotions of the circumstances around them. The song communicates the raw, tough realities of life and how it can wear on a person's hope and spirit.
Overall, the song "Hard for the Heart" is about someone who feels like they have been lost for a long time, seeking understanding and a sense of belonging. Despite the walls around them, they need more reassurance and want to know that they are not alone in their struggles.
