Dream Blues
Duke Ellington Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ain't never been blue; no, no, no,
You ain't never been blue,
Till you've had that mood indigo.
That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes
While I just sit here and sigh, "Go 'long blues".

I always get that mood indigo,
Since my baby said goodbye.
And in the evenin' when the lights are low,
I'm so lonely I could cry.
'Cause there's nobody who cares about me,
I'm just a poor fool that's bluer than blue can be.
When I get that mood indigo,
I could lay me down and die.

You ain't never been blue; no, no, no,
You ain't never been blue,
Till you've had that mood indigo.

That feelin' goes stealin' down to my shoes
While I just sit here and sigh, "Go 'long blues".

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" conveys a feeling of sadness and despair that is encapsulated by the overarching metaphor of the "mood indigo." The song begins with the assertion that the listener has never truly experienced the blues until they have felt this specific mood. The feeling is described as creeping down to the singer's shoes, emphasizing the all-encompassing and inescapable nature of the mood indigo. The lyrics also convey a sense of resignation and acceptance, as the singer sighs and tells the blues to "go 'long" rather than attempting to fight against them.

The second verse builds on these themes of loneliness and longing. The singer claims that they always feel the mood indigo, particularly since their lover has left them. The image of the evening with the lights low emphasizes the loneliness and isolation that the singer is experiencing. But despite their sadness, the singer seems resigned to their fate, acknowledging that "there's nobody who cares about me." The final line, "I could lay me down and die," is a powerful expression of despair and hopelessness.

Ellington’s response is so generous, illustrative, and beautiful. I don’t think I’ve encountered a more succinct expression of the aesthetic experience. And it strikes me that the Duke was speaking just as much to the process of taking in music (or any art) as he was to the process of making it.

Duke was many things, but I can't think of a better one-minute clip that captures what this one does. Just beautiful.

From Ken Burns documentary "Jazz" episode 5. Great documentary.

How beautiful. The Duke was among the greatest performers(“dreamers”) of all time.

I already listened to Duke Ellington before Yongguk's tweet, but it's nice to know that the man has good taste in music and he's willing to share the love. <3

The seated man is another great pianist- Oscar Levant. He was a very neurotic comic conversationalist who often appeared on the Jack Paar prime time TV variety show in the early 60s.

"that's dreaming"
Man I love you, I hope I see you in heaven.

Maybe it's 'don't dispose you dream' Ellington could create great music because he always had "dream" in his heart. And it's what Yongguk always says too.
