New Orleans
Dukes of Dixieland Lyrics

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
And miss it each night and day
I know I'm not wrong, the feeling's getting stronger
The longer I stay away

Miss the moss-covered vines, tall sugar pines
Where mockingbirds used to sing
I'd love to see that old lazy Mississippi
Hurrying into Spring
The moonlight on the bayou
A Creole tune that fills the air
I dream about magnolias in bloom
And I'm wishin' I was there

Do you know what it means to miss New Orleans
When that's where you left your heart
And there's one thing more, I miss the one I care for
More than I miss New Orleans

From Louis Armstrong, In His Own Words edited by Thomas Brothers (La, B,
Armstrong, Louis) Oxford Press 1999"The Dukes of Dixieland whom I think was the youngest group to leave New
Orleans was the first White Band whom me and my band played on the same
stage with, which was a great thrill to me. It was the N.O. Auditorium. We played
for a big concert there. I did not see the Dukes again until they came up North. I
set in with them when they played at a night club in Chicago-in New York I made
quite a few fine albums with them. They also were sensational from the first day
they left New Orleans. I did TV shows with them, played at Walt Disney's, played
Disneyland, etc. They are still going strong. So you can see how happy I am to,
know that I finally had a chance to blow with White Boys at last in my home
town New Orleans (about time -huh?). So to me the Dukes of Dixieland broke the
ice. One of the men said to me while we're on stage-"Satch' today we got New
Orleans Jazz in Black and White".

Holy cats Rich Matteson. I have played his jazz charts, but never, ever, have I heard such swinging killer bass lines! And on tuba no less! Unbelievable, just amazing.

A jazz album in my top ten. It always puts a tap in my foot and a smile in my heart. This album was made with lots of love and affection and you feel it in every note. It all comes together like a beautiful rainbow. Most of all it reminds me of my late grandmother and who loved Louis. She used to call him affectionately with her Yiddish accent, “that little mumzer.” Listen to that mumzer play, he’s got the chops!
