By the end of the year, Sheeran was seen to be one of the best unsigned artists in the country.

With this EP, Sheeran gained mainstream attention for reaching number 2 in the iTunes chart, without any promotion or label. Blue
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

But she used to be a friend of mine
Leading forward but fell behind
Loneliness redefined
Over and all of above I hope for
Happiness is all you know, but
I can't help but holding on, on
Silence is never golden
Quietly stuck in the moment
I'm not over you
I'll be forever lonely
Silence ain't golden
You know that it's only blue
Blue
It's only blue
Blue
Oh, I missed the mark a hundred times
Tried to take it back and change the night
Yeah, we used to set the dream alive
'Til the day it sunk and slowly died
Over and all of above I hope for
Happiness is all you know, but
I can't help but holding on, on
Silence is never golden
Quietly stuck in the moment
I'm not over you
I'll be forever lonely
Silence ain't golden
You know that it's only blue
Blue
It's only blue
Blue
It's only blue
In "Blue," Ed Sheeran reflects on a past friendship that has disintegrated into loneliness and heartache. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and regret as he navigates the aftermath of a broken connection. The verse, "Oh, it took a while to read the signs, but she used to be a friend of mine, leading forward but fell behind, loneliness redefined," suggests that Sheeran initially failed to recognize the signs that this friendship was deteriorating. He reminisces about the times they shared together, when they were close and filled with hope, but acknowledges that those moments have now faded and transformed into loneliness.
The chorus, "Silence is never golden, quietly stuck in the moment, I'm not over you, I'll be forever lonely, silence ain't golden, you know that it's only blue," emphasizes the pain and emptiness Sheeran feels. He expresses that the silence between them is suffocating, as it leaves him trapped in the memories of what once was. The repetition of the word "blue" reinforces the theme of sadness and melancholy that permeates throughout the song.
In summary, "Blue" explores the emotional aftermath of a failed friendship, capturing the feelings of regret and longing that linger in its wake. The lyrics paint a vivid picture of the loneliness that comes from losing someone who was once an integral part of your life.
