England
Ed Sheeran Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It is opening day and a brand new start
The stones have been cleared around the fisherman's hut
And the air bites, then leaves almost invisible cuts on the skin
A lighthouse retired, but a new one was hired
About twenty foot taller, painted in black and white
Twenty million steps with a computer inside instead of him

Only one road sign
Telling cars to slow down
And a long drop in the ocean
Beware of the rip tide
Broken glass and train lines
It's a new day, and this is England

Next to the pub with the flag that's working flexible hours
There's a mismatch of carriages, soil in a boat for some flowers
Fairy lights on a building that's supplying us power from the sea
Electricity lines flow like veins to the town
In between there is nothing but grass and pebbles on the ground
Do not enter the wild here if you want to be found for the free

View the flame of sunrise
Cut in half by the sky
And the empty of the desert
Team of birds that swerve by
And then land on the wires
It's a new day, and this is England

When it's time to escape from the heavy of this
There is nothing like washing away
I find this country of mine gets a bad reputation
Of being cold and grey
But on the coast of the south, to the east followed 'round
I find serenity I've never felt
There's a peace and a quiet in this island of ours
That can't be mirrored by anywhere else

Homes protruding from stones with their wood-coloured black
Scattered cars in a line, steam rising out the shack
One door at the front and then just glass at the back for the view

And the blue is so bright
You need shades for your eyes
And a cable to pull over
Take a walk and feel like

Everything will be fine
It's a new day, and this is England

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ed Sheeran's song "England" paint a vivid picture of the beauty and serenity found in the English countryside. The song speaks of a fresh start, symbolized by the opening day and the clearing of stones around a fisherman's hut. The biting air leaves "almost invisible cuts on the skin," representing the sharpness and harshness of reality. However, amidst this, a new lighthouse is introduced, taller and more modern, symbolizing progress and change.

The lyrics go on to describe the simplicity and charm of rural England. There is only one road sign, encouraging cars to slow down and appreciate the surroundings. The image of a long drop in the ocean warns of the dangers of the rip tide, and broken glass and train lines suggest a raw and untamed nature. Yet, despite this, it is a new day, and this is England.

The song then highlights the coastal beauty of the English countryside. There is a pub with a working flag, symbolizing the flexibility and adaptability of the people. The mismatch of carriages suggests a mix of old and new, while the fairy lights on a building powered by the sea showcase the resourcefulness and connection to nature. Electricity lines flow like veins, bringing life to the town. The lyrics emphasize the desolate beauty of the area, cautioning against entering the wild. This reflects the fragile balance between human presence and the untamed nature of the landscape.

The chorus expresses the singer's appreciation for England, countering its bad reputation of being cold and grey. The south coast is described as a place of serenity and peace, a contrast to the hectic nature of modern life. The beauty of the homes protruding from stones, steam rising out of shacks, and the breathtaking blue skies evoke a sense of tranquility and contentment. The lyrics convey the feeling that in England, everything will be fine, offering a refuge from the heaviness of life.

As much as I love England, it's a rapidly changing country and I don't mean that in a good way, sad but true and the majority of people know the main causes deep down.
