Begin the Beguine
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When they begin the beguine
It brings back the sound of music so tender,
It brings back a night of tropical splendor,
It brings back a memory ever green.

I'm with you once more under the stars,
And down by the shore an orchestra's playing
And even the palms seem to be swaying
When they begin the beguine.

To live it again is past all endeavor,
Except when that tune clutches my heart,
And there we are, swearing to love forever,
And promising never, never to part.

What moments divine, what rapture serene,
Till clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted,
And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted,
I know but too well what they mean;

So don't let them begin the beguine
Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember;
Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember
When they begin the beguine.

Oh yes, let them begin the beguine, make them play
Till the stars that were there before return above you,
Till you whisper to me once more,
"Darling, I love you!"

And we suddenly know, what heaven we're in,
When they begin the beguine

Overall Meaning

"Begin the Beguine" is a song by Eddie Fisher that captures the nostalgic and romantic feelings evoked by a beguine, a popular dance style in the 1930s and 1940s. The lyrics describe how hearing the beguine brings back memories of a time filled with music, passion, and tropical beauty. It transports the singer back to a precious moment shared with a loved one under the stars, with the sound of an orchestra playing in the background and the swaying palms creating an idyllic atmosphere.

The song highlights the longing to relive those enchanting moments, to experience the divine joy and serene rapture again. But the reality is that those moments are unattainable, lost in the past except when the melody of the beguine grips the singer's heart. In that instant, the memory resurfaces, reminding them of the everlasting love and the promise never to part.

However, the lyrics also reveal a certain bitterness and regret. The singer understands all too well the pain felt by those who curse the missed opportunities and wasted chances in love. There is a plea to halt the beguine, to let the love that once burned brightly remain as a flickering ember, a dormant desire that is only remembered when the beguine plays. It urges respite from the torment of longing for a love that can no longer be rekindled but also acknowledges the temptation to let the beguine begin once more, to relive the heavenly bliss and whisper those three words, "Darling, I love you."

Peter Farrar

The golden voice of Eddie Fisher's stunning performance of Cole Porter's wonderful romantic ballad " Begin The Beguine", & the superb musical collaboration by the Winterhalter's orchestra, raised this musical episode to the heavens. Fisher's crystal clear delivery, with power & supreme high range that threatens to invade the tenors domain. In my opinion, this is the best recording version I've listened to. All challenges to his musical talents were obliterated into silence.
