And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together dancing cheek to cheek
Heaven, I'm in heaven
And the cares that hung around me through the week
Seem to vanish like a gambler's lucky streak
When we're out together dancing (swinging) cheek to cheek
And reach the highest peak
But it doesn't thrill (boot) me half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
Oh I love to go out fishing
In a river or a creek
But I don't enjoy it half as much
As dancing cheek to cheek
(Come on and) Dance with me
I want my arm(s) about you
That (Those) charm(s) about you
Will carry me through...
(Right up) To heaven, I'm in heaven
And my heart beats so that I can hardly speak
And I seem to find the happiness I seek
When we're out together dancing, out together dancing (swinging)
Out together dancing cheek to cheek
The lyrics of "Cheek to Cheek" convey the feelings of utter joy and exhilaration that the singer experiences when dancing with their beloved. The opening line "Heaven, I'm in heaven" sets the tone for the song as a blissful and almost dreamlike state that the singer is in. They explain that their heart beats so fast that they can hardly speak, and that they feel the happiness they've been seeking when they're dancing with their partner cheek to cheek. The cares and worries of the week vanish like a gambler's lucky streak, and the singer feels in complete bliss.
The next verse builds on this idea, with the singer explaining that while they love climbing mountains and fishing, those activities don't come close to the joy they feel when dancing with their partner. The final verse seems to invite the listener to join the singer in this blissful state, asking them to dance and promising that the singer's arms around them will carry them to heaven.
Ultimately, the song is a celebration of the simple joys of dancing with someone you love, and the transformative power that experience can have.
