Embraceable You
Eddie Fisher Lyrics

I had to lock my door,
Somehow I couldn't warm up
To one before.
What was it that controlled me?
What kept my love-life lean?
My intuition told me
You'd come on the scene.
And you'll get just what I mean.
Embrace me,
My sweet embraceable you.
Embrace me,
You irreplaceable you.
Just one look at you, my heart grew tipsy in me.
You and you alone bring out the gypsy in me.
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don't be a naughty baby,
Come to papa, come to papa, do!
My sweet embraceable you.
I love all
The many charms about you;
Above all,
I want my arms about you.
Don't be a naughty baby,
Come to papa, come to papa, do!
My sweet embraceable you.
In the first verse, the singer reflects on his past experiences with women. He describes how numerous girls would pursue him, causing him to feel overwhelmed and locking his door to protect himself from the constant attention. Despite this, he confesses that he couldn't connect emotionally with any of them. He wonders what was the underlying reason that held him back from truly embracing someone, and his intuition reassured him that the right person would eventually come into his life.
The following lines convey the singer's strong emotions for the woman he is addressing. He asks her to listen to the rhythm of his heartbeat, as it perfectly expresses his deep feelings for her. The word "embraceable" in the song's title indicates that he longs to hold her close, to fully embrace her. This suggests a desire for closeness and intimacy, both physically and emotionally.
As the song progresses, the singer explains how just one look at her sent his heart into a frenzy, making him feel intoxicated and lightheaded. He reveals that she alone has awakened his inner free-spirited nature, referring to it as the "gypsy" within him. This signifies that the woman brings out a sense of adventure, passion, and wanderlust that he has not experienced with anyone else.
In the final lines, the singer expresses his overall affection for the woman, admiring her many charming qualities. He emphasizes that above all else, he wants to have his arms around her, symbolizing his desire to embrace her tightly. The plea for her to not be a "naughty baby" portrays a playful tone, as he invites her to come to him and be with him in a loving and affectionate manner. The repetition of the phrase "come to papa" signifies a yearning to be closer, to have her in his arms, and to cherish her presence. The song concludes with the reaffirmation of his desire for her, emphasizing her sweetness and his eternal longing to embrace her.
