And I'll hear you promise to love and obey
Though you may forget me, you're still on my mind
Look over your shoulder, I'm walking behind
Maybe I'll kiss again with a love that's new
But I shall wish again I was kissing you
And though we are parted, I want you to know
That if things go wrong, dear, and fate is unkind
Look over your shoulder, I'm walking behind
If things go wrong, dear, and fate is unkind
Look over your shoulder, I'm walking behind
The song "I'm Walking Behind You," performed by Eddie Fisher, is a poignant and bittersweet ballad that speaks to the pain of unrequited love. The lyrics tell the story of a man who is watching his former lover get married to another person, while he himself remains hopelessly devoted to her. He promises to always love her, even if she forgets him and moves on with her life. The chorus, which is repeated throughout the song, serves as a haunting reminder of the singer's presence: "Look over your shoulder, I'm walking behind."
The lyrics suggest that the singer is resigned to his fate, acknowledging that he may never be able to have a relationship with the woman he loves. Instead, he finds comfort in the mere act of watching her from afar, content to remain a silent witness to her life. The verse that says "Maybe I'll kiss again with a love that's new, but I shall wish again I was kissing you" speaks to the idea that even though he may try to move on, his heart will always belong to her. The final stanza, which again urges the woman to remember him in times of trouble, reinforces the idea that true love endures, even when circumstances change.
Overall, the song is a heartfelt expression of the enduring power of love, even in the face of heartbreak and loss. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most powerful love stories are the ones that go unspoken and unrequited.
