Invoking names like Dance Gavin Dance, Russian Circles, and the Dear Hunter, Eidola was founded in 2011 by Andrew Michael Wells (vocals), Brandon Bascom (guitar, vocals), James Johnson (bass), Matthew Dommer (guitar, vocals), and Matthew Hansen (drums). The band self-released its 2012 debut album, The Great Glass Elephant. Two years later the group inked a deal with Dance Gavin Dance guitarist Will Swan's indie label Blue Swan Records and issued Degeneraterra. In early 2017 they dropped the single "Amplissimus Machina" ahead of the arrival of their third studio long-player, To Speak, to Listen, which featured guest spots from Joey Lancaster, ex-A Lot Like Birds bassist Matthew Coate, and saxophonist Nicholas Pope. Guitarist Brandon Bascom left the fold shortly after the album's release and was replaced by Sergio Medina. In 2021, Eidola unveiled the fiery "Counterfeit Shines," their first new single in four years. It appeared on their fourth full-length effort, 2021's Rise-issued The Architect. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

Amplissimus Machina
Eidola Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Entheat decode the great machine
Departure from consistency of dogmatic assimilation
They're lost in misology
And I can't relate to the nescient train of thought
So, omnierudite, are you here to watch the world burn
In compurgation or contrition?
And I've seen it so many times before
No love, just careless communication
To reprocess counterfeit meaning
In who we are when all is one
All that's ours is what you want
It is non-existent (Inclination, a conscious separation)
The path I choose to walk, (Inclination, a conscious separation)
It is self-consistent. (Circumstances, ends that take no chances)
Until I see the end (Adaptation. Human fabrication)
They've taken away our lives
And our ability to separate what's real
In all the lies and false beliefs
The machines have taken all I've ever known
They've taken away our eyes
And our ability to think and feel alive
I feel all of my thoughts resolve
The machines have taken all I've ever know
Breathe in
Bring me close and watch my eyes
Concentrate
Don't turn away
Breath out
This could be our way out now
Normality, incongruity
Entheat decode the great machine
Convergence of variation, of singularity assimilation
Free yourself in constant motion
No surprises. No devotion
Awake, protest the monolith
Or let this be the end
The lyrics of Eidola's song, Amplissimus Machina, present a strong stance against conformity and the loss of one's sense of self due to the influence of societal beliefs and machines. The first line, "Anomaly. Conformity", already presents a contradictory and ironic image of the pressure to conform to the norm, which goes against the essence of being unique and rare.
The next line, "Entheat decode the great machine", refers to the idea of spiritual experience leading to the understanding and deciphering of the "great machine" that controls people. The following lines, "Departure from consistency of dogmatic assimilation" and "Convergence of variation, of singularity assimilation", highlight the idea of resisting the pressure to conform to dogmatic beliefs, which tend to erase individuality, and instead embrace one's uniqueness.
The lines, "And I've seen it so many times before, No love, just careless communication, To reprocess counterfeit meaning, In who we are when all is one, All that's ours is what you want", suggest a sense of disillusionment with the disingenuous and shallow way people communicate, highlighting the desire for authenticity and the need to find meaning in one's existence. The song concludes with the lines, "Awake, protest the monolith, Or let this be the end", which leaves the message open for interpretation, but ultimately encourages people to resist conformity and fight for their authenticity and individuality.
