However, Neubauten soon outgrew the confines of even the broad scope of industrial music. In their 25-plus years, they have produced a dozen studio albums, live records, a remix album and EP, scored theatre pieces, and more.
Lead vocalist Blixa Bargeld is perhaps the best-known member of the group, both for his work with Neubauten and as guitarist for Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. His fellow founding members Alexander Hacke and N.U. Unruh have likewise been active in various musical roles outside the group over the years.
Bassist Mark Chung was a member of the group from 1981 to 1994. He founded the publishing house Freibank Music Publishing to handle business affairs for Neubauten and other groups, and has continued in this role (concurrently serving as a senior vice-president of Sony Music International for nine years). Percussionist FM Einheit, was a member from 1981 to 1995, and has also been active as a solo artist and member of groups such as Gry.
Since 1997 the group has also included guitarist Jochen Arbeit and percussionist Rudi Moser.
Neubauten's most recent work has been available exclusively to subscribers to their online home, www.neubauten.org. Neubauten completed the third incarnation of their online project in November 2007 and were touring Europe in 2008 in support of their latest album Alles Wieder Offen.
Currently Einstürzende Neubauten is celebrating their 30th anniversary with a tour through Europe and the United States. In October/November 2010 the band is releasing Strategies Against Architecture IV, the fourth album in the archival compilation series by Neubauten which collates the band’s output from 2002-2010.
Die genaue Zeit

Alle werden gleich
Wie spät mag es sein?
Die Macht ist ein laufendes Band
und meine Ohren sind Wunden.
Es ist so flach hier.
Muzak für Leichenschauhäuser und Neubauten
angenehm summend
Akkordnarben
in meinem Gesicht.
Es ist so flach hier.
Wie spät mag es sein?
Hör auf die Stimme deines Herrn.
Auch Lakaien haben Taktgefühl.
Wie spät mag es sein?
Alles wird Muzak.
Alle sind gleich.
Die Macht ist ein laufendes Tonband.
Alles wird Muzak
und alle sind gleich.
Wie spät mag es sein?
Alle Studios der Welt
im gleichen Moment
abschalten.
Wie spät mag es sein?
Es ist so flach hier.
Zwischen 33 und 45
oder im 2-Stundentakt.
Es ist eine Frage der Lautstärke
und alle sind gleich, gleich.
The lyrics of "Die genaue Zeit" by Einstürzende Neubauten touch upon themes of conformity, power, and the dehumanizing effects of technology. The opening lines, "Alles wird Muzak, alle werden gleich" (Everything becomes Muzak, everyone becomes the same), suggest a homogenization of culture and a loss of individuality. The reference to Muzak, an early form of background music played in public spaces, emphasizes the numbing effect of mass media and commercialism. The repetition of the line "Wie spät mag es sein?" (What time may it be?) could imply a sense of uncertainty or disorientation in the face of these societal changes.
The line "Die Macht ist ein laufendes Band" (Power is a conveyor belt) foreshadows the idea that people are caught up in a machine-like system controlled by those in power. The phrase "Akkordnarben in meinem Gesicht" (Assembly line scars on my face) reinforces this imagery, as people become like machines themselves, marked by the repetitive labor they perform. The line "Hör auf die Stimme deines Herrn" (Listen to the voice of your master) suggests that people have become subservient to authority figures, while the following line "Auch Lakaien haben Taktgefühl" (Even lackeys have a sense of rhythm) implies that those in power rely on the compliance of their subordinates.
The final lines of the song, "Es ist eine Frage der Lautstärke und alle sind gleich, gleich" (It is a question of volume and everyone is the same, the same), reinforce the idea that conformity is enforced through technology and media. The repetition of the word "gleich" (same) underscores this message, leaving the listener with a sense of bleakness and hopelessness.
