Imagine My Frustration
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I went down to the dance
Such a clown by the wall
Invited to dance
By no one at all

The couples danced fine
So charming and gay
But nobody wants
To look over my way

So awfully sad
Dissatisfied
I hurt so bad
I almost cried
Imagine my frustration with no
Invitation to dance

Head high, standing tall
Who else, who else could I be?
But Ella next to the wall
A fella who likes what they see?

And then in my ear
Someone said to me
Wallflower, my dear
How come you can't see
They couldn't care less?
They're not impressed
As you might have guessed
You're in excess

Imagine my frustration with no
Invitation to dance

I smiled to the crowd
Tip toe and alert
Yes, the band blues went loud
But next on a flirt

A voice said to me
Wallflower, my dear
You're sweet as can be
But how come you're here
They couldn't care less
About your dress
You're in a mess
And in excess

Imagine my frustration with no
Invitation to dance

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ella Fitzgerald's "Imagine My Frustration" describe the feeling of being left out and not included. The singer goes to a dance and feels like a "clown" standing by the wall, watching everyone else dance and have a good time. They are not invited to dance, despite their best efforts, and they are left feeling sad, hurt, and frustrated. However, a fellow wallflower takes notice and gives the singer some advice. They tell the singer that the other dancers couldn't care less about them and that they are in excess.

The song's theme of feeling left out and not included will resonate with many listeners, as it's a universal feeling that almost everyone has experienced. Additionally, the song touches on the idea of self-doubt and how we often hold ourselves back from experiencing joy because of our insecurities.

I don't think it would be an exaggeration to say there is no greater live recording than this. Ella at her peak. Duke Ellington. Johnny Hodges. That band. The lucky people who were at this concert experienced total greatness. Look at Duke's face just as Ella finishes. It's like, "Even I can't believe what I just heard!"

Now this is REAL jazz, Ella and Ellington, superb band, and it simply doesn't get much better than this! Ella was really one of a kind, totally inimitable, no one came close before or after her. She truly WAS the "First Lady of Song!"

@CriticalListener

Ella never disappoints with her wonderful, expressive vocals. And Duke Ellington had a pretty good orchestra too.
