4 No Name #2
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Concrete hands picked up the telephone ring
Do you know who you're talking to?
No, and I don't care who
She whispered quiet terror news
He didn't give a hoot
Said do what you have to do
All she had to do was speak
Mouthpiece to cheek
Please say no more
I'm lying here on the ground
A strip of wet concrete
Her name was just a broken sound
A struffle step you hear when you're falling down

Killing time won't stop this crying
Killing time won't stop this crying
Killing time won't stop this crying

You better start watching what message that you send now
No more situations I only go in to be kicked out
He got knocked down leaning like he ran into a clothesline
And remembered a couple of words that hid a crime
You're just fine
You'll be just fine
But I'm on the other line

Killing time won't stop this crying

Killing time won't stop this crying
Killing time won't stop this crying

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Elliott Smith's "4 No Name #2" are laced with mystery and confusion. The opening lines center on a phone call with the singer picking it up, and the interaction that follows reveals a sense of detachment as the conversation begins with the question of the caller's identity. The singer does not care about the caller's identity, which could mean that they have given up on trying to identify a certain person or have become weary of everyone in their significant other's life. When the caller whispers urgent and harrowing news, the singer is unresponsive and indifferent. They encourage the caller to do what they have to do, which suggests a sense of neglect and disinterest.

The second half of the song is about the singer's state of mind as they try to make sense of their experiences. They repeat the phrase, "Killing time won't stop this crying," which could mean that they are trying to distract themselves from the emotional pain, but it is not helping. The lyrics also focus on the need to watch one's words or the messages they convey and the experience of being excluded or kicked out of certain situations. The end of the song sees the singer assuring someone that they will be just fine while on another call.

Overall, the meaning of "4 No Name #2" is open to interpretation. The song could be about a crumbling relationship, dissociative disorders, substance abuse, and many more. Nonetheless, it's a hauntingly beautiful and emotion-provoking one that's worth a listen.

When I 1st got out of prison this was the total end of my 3rd trip BTW but last- To a 12 year addiction I returned home to see my dad who I had thought hung the moon just absolutely the worst attic or alcoholic I have ever witnessed in a life - Come out in a near 2 years a And 4 months of my absence. I don't know why but I will cry and listen to This song and then trying to be there for my dad as much as possible. At the time I felt like it maybe it was karma having to look through a quiet amplified looking glass.

5 years later I am driving my son home and.. So much as happened I found out my mom has narcissistic personality in order which runs my whole family my dad is no longer nice to me for fear of backlash.. He used to stand up to it but I guess he became... I mean me.

Now I understand. Poor childhood and disfunctional family structures absolutely do almost always lead to addiction.
Or other self destructive things like .... Anorexia etc .

I named my son who happens to have down syndrome and require all my time, Elliott.
Obvious origin.

This song... weird I didn't know why I wanted To listen to listen to it over and over because at the time you know I did but I was told I quit which would literally fix everything because I was told I was the entire problem.
Obviously not true and in a way I wish that I never ever quit because I would still at least have this idea in my head That I had any kind of anybody

Hey! I’ve been sitting here trying to figure out the best way to explain this line for you. After 20 minutes of research and debating with myself, I realized that I won’t be able to explain it to you clearly :(
Maybe someone else will come along and help out 🖤 This line is pure genius though... just like everything Elliott made. Like, I know exactly what he means with this line as it conjures up the perfect feeling ... But I just can’t explain how or why. He was great at creating metaphors that could really make you feel.

@kyleb5496

@@MrPolytoximania The line is about "her name" making you stop and pause when you're on your way into alcoholism/depression/bad habits

@lostintheflurry

@@kyleb5496 yes but not enough to stop the descent, heard in the background and drowned out by the momentum of the fall

@grungepants

@@lostintheflurry Could be about his mom, about how interactions with her lead to pain and drinking.

I only became a fan of his just under a year ago, so it isn’t that I miss him so much as I am sad at his passing and go into each new song of his that I haven’t heard before with that sadness in mind.
