Flowers for Charlie
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Flowers for Charlie, you know
I'm not a good G.I. Joe
Because I always aim low
And I won't fight you

Popularity war
I'd be a clown in the corp
Taking over the store
It's a cop out

I don't want to win
New friends anymore
There's a world within
But I can't call out

Kiss me quickly
I'm in a hurry
And I've got worry enough
Trying to stay around

Brought you a flower
From the other side

It's a free world
You don't have to hide

Overall Meaning

In Elliott Smith's song "Flowers for Charlie," the singer seems to be expressing his lack of interest in conforming to societal expectations and the pressure to fit in. He acknowledges his shortcomings as a "good G.I. Joe" and admits that he aims low and won't fight the popularity war. He acknowledges that he would rather be a clown in the corp, not interested in taking over the store, which he sees as a cop-out.

The singer expresses his disillusionment with the idea of making new friends and the world outside, but he's aware of the world within himself that he can't express. The line "kiss me quickly, I'm in a hurry" speaks to a lack of time or urgency in the character's life. The singer brings a flower from the other side, and it's a free world, and he suggests that his friend (Charlie?) doesn't have to hide.

The song speaks to themes of isolation, disillusionment, and not fitting into the mold expected by society. It suggests that the singer is aware of his shortcomings and is trying to find his own way, even though he's not sure where he's going.

Years ago someone reviewed my music and in that review they listed similar artists, all names I didn’t recognize. One of those was Elliott Smith. The first song I ever played made him my favorite songwriter immediately. No music before or since has ever compared and I am so thankful for that reviewer. I don’t even know his name, but my god he changed my life.

I don't think this is about forgiving Charlie... I see it as Elliott saying to his step dad, "I don't want to fight, but I think you should be honest and stop hiding the fact that you abused me." The "Flowers for Charlie" sounds kind of sarcastic, too. Idk that's just how I interpret this song
