I Figured You Out
Elliott Smith Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

seen you watching
her every time she crosses the floor
so just go and talk to
someone you really adore
i'm getting pretty used to being
the one you always ignore
when somebody wants you
i've seen it before

you're every kind of color
there ain't nothing that you won't claim
your ambition and promise
and your addiction to fame
and everyone's got a dollar
sign after their name
when somebody wants you
you treat 'em just the same

so go on and pick up
you don't care what poison you choose
or what person you'll use
should've been me, yeah
shouldn't it be?

crushing quiet
crawls in through your window
from someone who wants you
but you'll never know
i'll pick up around you
clear everything out

leave you where i found you
i figured you out

Overall Meaning

In "I Figured You Out," Elliott Smith sings about a person who is preoccupied with someone they will never be with. The person is constantly watching someone else cross the floor, hoping to catch their attention. Smith suggests that the singer should try to talk to someone they actually adore instead of focusing on someone who is not interested in them. The singer has become accustomed to being ignored by the person they are watching, and they have also witnessed others wanting that person in the past.

Smith paints the picture of someone who is multi-faceted- they love claiming every kind of color as their own, they are ambitious, addicted to fame and money, and everyone they encounter has a dollar sign after their name. The singer realizes that when somebody wants this person, they treat them in the same way that they treat everyone else- using them for personal gain.

The song then takes a turn as Smith admits that he should have been the one that this person paid attention to. The singer is left with a crushing silence and they feel like they haven't been seen by the person they are infatuated with. The song ends with the singer picking up around the person, leaving everything as they found it, and claiming that they have "figured [them] out."

Overall, "I Figured You Out" is a song about unrequited love, the dangers of becoming obsessed with someone who doesn't see you, and the consequences of staying in that mindset.

've seen you watching her
Every time she crosses the floor
So why don't you just go and talk to

I've seen it before

You're every kind of color
There ain't nothing that you won't claim

When somebody wants you
You treat them just the same

So go on and pick up
You don't care what poison you choose
And what person you lose
Should've been me, yeah
Shouldn't it be?

The crushing quiet
Blows in through your window
To someone that wants you
That you'll never know
But I'll pick up around you
And clear everything out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out
Leave you where I found you
I figured you out

2nd verse:

You're every kind of collar
There ain't nothing that you won't claim
Your ambition and promise
Your addiction to fame
And everyone has a dollar
Sign after their name
And if somebody wants you
You treat 'em just the same

Sharlotte Sometimes I cant convince anyone to like Elliott Smith lol

To be fair, I didn’t like him that much at first, apart from a few songs. But eventually I went through all his albums...then I did it again, and again, and again. That’s what it took for me.

Some people just like different music. They like it to be more accessible, or have a different mood, or to be more uplifting.

I disagree with the guy saying you have to be intelligent to appreciate Elliott—I think it’s more about the kind of music you life and what your personality is like.

I think Elliott Smith is a musical genius, but his music just isn’t for everyone. I think many more could potentially enjoy his music if they 1) heard it, and 2) have it enough listens to really start appreciating. But even among those who will do it, not everyone will like it.

My friend likes an artist called Ezra Bell, and though he’s clearly talented, I can’t emotionally connect with his music. Elliott makes music I can connect with, yet that friend isn’t into him. We’re just wired differently.

It's crazy how every single song Elliott ever wrote was so incredible. I've never felt such a strong connection to any other musician and their music. He was truly one of a kind.
