One-Sided Love Affair
Elvis Presley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you want to be loved,
Baby, you've got to love me, too
If you want to be loved,
Baby, you've got to love me, too
Oh yeah, 'cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

If you want to be kissed,
Well, you've gotta kiss me, too
Oh yeah, if you want to be kissed,
Well, you gotta kiss me, too, oh yeah
'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

Well, fair exchange bears no robbery,
And the whole world will know that it's true
Understanding solves all problems, baby,
That's why I'm telling you

If you want to be hugged,
Well, you gotta hug me, too, oh yeah
If you want to be hugged,
Well, you've gotta hug me, too, oh yeah
'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

If you know you can't take it,
Then baby, why try to give it?
If you know you can't take it,
Then baby, why try to give it?
'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

Well, fair exchange bears no robbery,
And the whole world will know that it's true
Understanding solves all problems, baby,
That's why I'm telling you

If you want to be hugged,
Well, you gotta hug me, too, oh yeah,
If you want to be hugged,
Baby, you gotta hug me, too, oh yeah
'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair
'Cause I ain't for no one-sided love affair

At its core it's a hokey song, but Elvis is just such a vocal genius, he gives it an edge. His vocals are amazing. Complete original.

HiPlanes Drifter

Most, if not all, love songs are hokey. But yes Elvis sings it like no other can. He puts such energy, such heart, such passion, such power into the vocals . . . no one else can touch him.

One of my all-time favorite Elvis records! Has it all: the exciting, bluesy vocals including that Elvis singing-in-the throat technique, great lyrics (we all can identify with being in a one-sided love affair, I'm sure), and some great boogie woogie piano. I've been playing this on my radio shows ever since I first went on the air February 1, 1976 on WSRN - Swarthmore, Pa.! Played it also on WDNA - Miami; WUNH - Durham, N.H.; and nowadays on WEGL - Auburn, Ala. Elvis at his best!
