He was a pupil of Franz Liszt and one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation, emphasizing the original Liszt approach to pianism as well as a strong Romantic approach to a musical technique that demanded a total command of the keyboard in what was known as the Liszt School of piano.
Some of his pupils continued on to successful concert careers including Webster Aitken, Stefan Askenase, Robert Goldsand, Ignace Hilsberg, Maryla Jonas, Lubka Kolessa, Elly Ney, Ozan Marsh, Dario Raucea, and Marie Aimée Varro.
He wrote piano concertos, piano sonatas, concert études, piano pieces and Lieder.

I'm imagining Liszt sightreading it just like this in front of Chopin, and making Chopin jealous. Liszt sightread all 24, so that must've been one humiliating night for Chopin.

Thanks for uploading this!

His second piano concerto is also available on CD. The first concerto has a slow movement to die for (though the other movements are - well - they're ok).

The third movement of the E minor concerto No. 1 is spectacular. It has the same ineluctable charm of Mozart's finest concertos with a joyful main theme and some great virtuosic cadenzas towards the end.

Somehow this is how I would imagine Beethoven playing this piece.
