He was a pupil of Franz Liszt and one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation, emphasizing the original Liszt approach to pianism as well as a strong Romantic approach to a musical technique that demanded a total command of the keyboard in what was known as the Liszt School of piano.
Some of his pupils continued on to successful concert careers including Webster Aitken, Stefan Askenase, Robert Goldsand, Ignace Hilsberg, Maryla Jonas, Lubka Kolessa, Elly Ney, Ozan Marsh, Dario Raucea, and Marie Aimée Varro.
He wrote piano concertos, piano sonatas, concert études, piano pieces and Lieder.

Beautiful performance. Another celestial performance: Dohnanyi plays Schubert Impromptu in G-Flat Major, Op.90, No.3 - YouTube

The performance of this particular impromptu is reminiscent of the playing of Kempff.

I was doing OK until the part where Liszt meddled. Totally spoils it for me. So many great performances of this wonderful Impromptu but the first one I heard sixty years ago by Dinu Lipatti still entrances. The piece is not technically difficult for a competent pianist (which I am NOT) but there is always something indefinable that makes a great performance.
