Song of Durin
Eurielle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A king there was on throne engraved
In great halls of colonnades
With roof of gold and argent floor
And mighty runes along the door
The brightest light of moon and star
In crystal lamps shines through the dark
Unshadowed by the veil of night
They burned eternal shimmering white
The skies are bleak, the hills are aged
The forge's flames have died away
No songs are sung, no blade is cast
In Durin's halls the evil lasts
The darkness hangs over his tomb
Beneath the mountain in the gloom
But e'er the fallen stars glow freer
In cool and breathless Mirrormere

There rests his crown in water clear
Till Durin returns once more from sleep

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Eurielle's "Song of Durin" narrate the story of a king who once had a grand palace with impressive features like a floor made of silver and a roof of gold. The hall was decorated with ancient runes that made it look more majestic. The light of the moon and star shone so brightly through the halls that it was not necessary to have any other light source, and the whole palace was eternally illuminated. The scene then changes, and we can see that the skies are lifeless, the mountains are old, and the flames of the forge are out. Evil has taken over Durin's palaces, and no one sings songs or wields blades anymore. The king Durin is buried under a mountain, and his tomb is enveloped in gloom. However, Durin's crown now rests in perfect harmony in the water of Mirrormere, and this makes the fallen stars radiate more clearly until such a time that Durin's reign is restored.

Lyrics:

A king he was on carven throne
In many-pillared halls of stone
With golden roof and silver floor
And runes of power upon the door
The light of sun and star and moon
In shining lamps of crystal hewn
Undimmed by cloud or shade of night
There shone forever fair and bright
The world is grey, the mountains old
The forge's fire is ashen-cold
No harp is wrung, no hammer falls
The darkness dwells in Durin's halls
The shadow lies upon his tomb
In Moria, in Khazad-dûm
But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere
There lies his crown in water deep
Till Durin wakes again from sleep

All these years later, knowing Thorin oakenshield gave a simple Hobbit a coat of mithril showed that Durins heir was worthy of his lineage...

For anyone who was wondering, this song is not found in The Hobbit. It Is found  in book 2 of The Fellowship of the Ring, chapter 4, A Journey In the Dark. Gimli sings it in response to Samwise Gamgee's referring to Moria as "darksome holes".
