The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.
Asas
Fagner Lyrics

Sao as asas da imaginação
A dor voa mas volta sempre
E pousa no meu coração
O que este punhal tem de ave ...
Voa gaivota leve, voa breve
Que guarda a carne dos peixes
E a solidão do poeta
Voa gaivota ...
In Fagner's song "Asas," the lyrics talk about the pain that returns to the singer's heart even though it seems to fly away at times. The punhal (dagger) has wings of imagination because it represents the pain or hurt that the singer feels but cannot fully express. The punhal's "wings" enable the singer to transform their pain into something artistic, like a song. However, the pain never truly goes away and keeps coming back to haunt the singer.
The next verse talks about a seagull flying above the sea. The sea conceals a lot of secrets and mysteries, just like the pain in the singer's heart. The sea also represents the poet's solitude as they are captivated by the vastness and emptiness of the sea. The seagull is free to fly wherever it wants, but the poet is trapped in their thoughts and emotions.
Overall, the song is about the struggle to come to terms with pain and how it can be transformed into art. It portrays the idea that pain can never truly be overcome, but it is possible to find some solace in creativity and imagination.

O que este punhal tem de ave
What this dagger has of bird
Sao as asas da imaginação
Are the wings of imagination
A dor voa mas volta sempre
Pain flies but always comes back
E pousa no meu coração
And settles in my heart
Voa gaivota leve, voa breve
Fly seagull light, fly briefly
Que o mar tem a alma secreta
That the sea has a secret soul
Que guarda a carne dos peixes
That keeps the flesh of fish
E a solidão do poeta
And the loneliness of the poet
