The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Com o fim do verão
O Sol está presente
Como continua o impossível amor
Pela primeira vez, meu amor
Eu me sinto feliz
Sabendo que sou
Sabendo que dou
Quantas vezes vagueio no quarto
Ou nos bares tão só
Mas eu nunca fui triste
Os corredores da vida, eu já sei de cor
Já não sinto temor de sentir
Já não sei mais chorar
É que o choro não vem
Quando quero sorrir
Quando quero sorrir
Quantas vezes vagueio no quarto
A canção brasileira chegou
Com o fim do verão
The lyrics of Fagner's song "Canção Brasileira" depict a sense of transformation and newfound happiness. The opening line "A canção brasileira chegou" (The Brazilian song has arrived) suggests that something significant has changed or emerged. This could refer to a shift in the music landscape or a metaphorical arrival of a new phase in the singer's life.
The mention of the end of summer and the presence of the sun signifies a new beginning. It could symbolize warmth, optimism, and the possibility for growth. The concept of an "impossible love" suggests that the singer has been yearning for a love that seems unattainable. However, for the first time, they feel a sense of happiness, knowing that they are capable of giving and receiving love in its most beautiful form.
The following verse talks about times when the singer wanders in their room or in bars, feeling lonely. However, despite these moments, they have never been truly sad. This could imply that the singer has a resilient spirit and is able to find solace even in solitude. They have become familiar with the ups and downs of life and are no longer afraid to feel. Crying, which used to come easily, has now become a rarity. Instead, they choose to smile when they want to.
The repetition of the lines "Quantas vezes vagueio no quarto / Ou nos bares tão só / Mas eu nunca fui triste" emphasizes the singer's ability to find joy and contentment within themselves, even in moments of loneliness. They have become so well-acquainted with the various pathways of life that they no longer fear the emotions that come along. The mention of not being able to cry when they want to smile suggests a freedom from emotional burdens and a newfound ability to find happiness.
In conclusion, "Canção Brasileira" portrays a sense of personal growth and transformation in the singer's life. They have embraced the Brazilian song within them, signifying an acceptance of their own identity and their ability to pursue a happier and more fulfilling existence. The lyrics express a sense of resilience, joy in solitude, and a departure from the fear of emotions. Ultimately, it is a declaration of finding beauty and happiness in both oneself and others.
