The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

O que eu imagino é muito mais
É outra estória, é outra, eu sei
Mas vou ficar perdido e louco
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
A cada amor a gente sabe
Eu chorarei
Da minha vida o que farei
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
A cada amor a gente sabe
Que nada entende
Eu chorarei
Da minha vida o que farei
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
Mas vou ficar perdido e louco
Mas daqui a pouco eu já gostei
In Fagner's song "Outra Estoria," the singer is expressing his emotions towards a person whose gaze is too vague for him to decipher. He states that what he imagines in his mind is far greater than what the person's eyes convey. The singer acknowledges that his fantasies may be far-fetched but they excite him nonetheless. He is aware that his feelings towards this person may end up consuming him and driving him insane. Despite this, he confesses that he's already developed an attraction towards the person, hoping that his affection will be reciprocated.
The song highlights the complexities of love, how it can be both exciting and daunting at the same time. The lyrics suggest that even though we may not fully understand our feelings, we still choose to succumb to them, hoping that they lead us in the right direction. The line "A cada amor a gente sabe que nada entende" translates to "With each love, we know that we understand nothing," and this captures the fragility of relationships and how we are often left feeling vulnerable and uncertain.
