After releasing six studio albums, including best-selling records The Real Thing (1989) and Angel Dust (1992), Faith No More officially announced its breakup on April 20, 1998. The band has since reunited, conducting The Second Coming Tour between 2009 and 2010, and releasing its seventh studio album, Sol Invictus, in May 2015. After the touring cycle of Sol Invictus, Faith No More went on hiatus once again. In November 2019, the band announced that it would reunite to embark on a 2020 UK and European tour, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this was postponed. Touring was due to recommence with a brief US tour in September 2021, followed by the previously postponed UK and Europe dates in June 2022, but all tour dates were cancelled with Patton citing mental health reasons.

Faith No More Lyrics

I hear the wind and the trees
I know I'm there, but I'll never be
The wind is soft tonight, the tide is low
And I know the way
(I never felt better now)
Sometimes life, it moves too slow
And without speed, hope becomes certainty
And for once I'm certain
(I never felt better now)
A garden is it's own perfect world
Where everything has a place
Every leaf, every stone, every speck of dirt
But where's my place?
I even tried to get arrested today
But everyone looked the other way
I count the hours, and I count the days
But for once I'm certain
Don't want your help
Don't need your help
Don't want your help
Don't need your help
Helpless
You found a way to make me say
Help me please someone
The water's clear
I see that it's full of dimes
For every wish, I wonder why
Why all I want is something beautiful
A place to rest
(I never felt better now)
Help
The lyrics of "Helpless" by Faith No More are introspective, as the singer is lost and searching for their place in the world. The song starts with the description of a warm night where the wind is blowing and the trees are rustling. The singer feels like they are present but not there, and they are searching for a sense of purpose. Then, the song shifts to a commentary on life moving too slowly and how when it does, it feels like there is no poetry in it. The singer is searching for certainty and comfort, but they feel lost.
The next stanza has the singer using the metaphor of a garden, which is a perfect world where everything has a place. This is symbolic of the idea that the singer wants to find a sense of purpose and belonging but cannot. They even try to get arrested to feel something, but no one pays attention to them. The song ends with the singer rejecting help from others because they want to find their own way, but they are still helpless.
Overall, "Helpless" is a song about feeling lost and searching for a sense of belonging. It is a commentary on how life can move too slowly, and without any direction, it can feel pointless.
