Ain’t Misbehavin
Fats Waller Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one to talk with
All by myself
No one to walk with
But I'm happy on the shelf
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

I know for certain
The one I love
I'm through with flirtin'
It's just you I'm thinkin' of
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio
Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Like Jack Horner
In the corner
Don't go nowhere
What do I care?
Your kisses are worth waitin' for
Believe me

I don't stay out late
Don't care to go
I'm home about eight
Just me and my radio

Ain't misbehavin'
I'm savin' my love for you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Fats Waller and His Rhythm's song Ain't Misbehavin' speak of a person who finds themselves alone, with no one to talk with and nothing to do. However, they are content in their solitude, as they have someone special in their life whose love they are saving. The singer declares their unwavering loyalty to this person, stating that they are through with flirting and that they only have them on their mind.

The mention of Jack Horner in the corner of the song refers to the English nursery rhyme "Little Jack Horner." The singer suggests that they are content staying in one place, much like Jack Horner, as they are waiting for the person they love. They believe that the kisses they receive from this special someone are worth the wait.

The song's lyrics are simple yet effective as they emphasize the importance of devotion in a relationship. The singer is not interested in playing the field or engaging in casual relationships, all they want is to be with their special someone. The refrain "Ain't Misbehavin'" serves as a reminder that they are being faithful to their partner, despite being alone for the moment.

@grognok

It's amazing isn't it. I absolutely love all the old time music, sadly it can't be replicated.

@zavierbusby7167

@@grognok it most certainly cannot be replicated. Very wise words.

@higofyp

My grandfather got me into his music when I was about 6 years old. That's well over 20 years ago now. For my birthday, he found a guy who was the only one in the neighbourhood who had a cassette recorder and made me a mixtape of his songs. I'll never forget that gift, and I wish I appreciated it at the time as much as I do now.
