His latest work being 2013's 'Bookmarks', his breakout into international success came with his 2000 album 'America Town', which went platinum in the U.S. due to the widespread acclaim of his song "Superman (It's Not Easy)" in late 2001. His 2004 album 'The Battle For Everything' has also enjoyed considerable chart success in the U.S. Ondrasikhas released a DualDisc of his 2004 album as well, with has one side containing 'The Battle for Everything' in its entirety and the other side being a DVD containing bonus footage and the "100 Years" music video.

John Ondrasik was born in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. He grew up there in a musical family, with his mother teaching him the piano from the age of two. As a teenager, he learned how to play the guitar as well and started to write music. While he also learned to sing opera briefly, he quickly decided that he would like to be a piano playing popular musician along the lines of Elton John and Billy Joel. Ondrasik adopted the name "Five for Fighting" which is an expression in ice hockey when a player is sent from the rink by the referee for a major penalty. The name was used for the reason that it would be more memorable than his real name.

In 1997, his first album, 'Message for Albert', was released by EMI. Although not quite breaking through commercially, fans of modern singer-songwriter music provided a warm audience for Ondrasik. After the success of 'America Town', Capitol Records re-released this debut album to give it a more mainstream audience.

In 2000, Ondrasik signed with the aforementioned Columbia Records and released 'America Town' on September 26, 2000. At first, it made little impact until track "Superman (It's Not Easy)" became an American anthem after the September 11 attacks. Ondrasik performed the song at 'The Concert for New York Cit'y in late 2001.

"Superman (It's Not Easy)" started climbing the charts reaching the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the Billboard Adult Top 40. While 'America Town' itself failed to make the top 50 of the Billboard 200 album charts, its consistent sales led to it going platinum. "Superman (It's Not Easy)" was also an international hit reaching number one on a composite adult international chart (based on performance in the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, the United Kingdom and Australia). Ondrasik's second single, "Easy Tonight", would make the top 20 of the world adult chart as well as going top 20 in New Zealand.

His third album, 'The Battle for Everything', debuted at number 20 on the Billboard 200 in February 2004. Its first single, "100 Years", was another top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and again reached number one on the World Adult Top 40. It also was number one on a composite world airplay chart and top 10 on a composite world modern rock chart. (based on USA, Germany, United Kingdom, Finland, Sweden, Canada and Australia).

The Five for Fighting song "100 Years" was used in a ubiquitous JP Morgan Chase commercial, and more recently in an episode of Scrubs. The song was also used in the last scenes of the final episode of JAG.

Lately, Ondrasik's sixth album, 2013's 'Bookmarks', came out after a four year gap between his last release. The album has received critical praise from a variety of publications such as Allmusic, where the reviewer lauded how Five for Fighting produced " sturdy tunes wrapped up neatly in a shiny, appealing gloss". Released by the label Universal, his work also hit the #54 slot on the Billboard 200, with his fans happily looking forwards to his future endeavors.

My younger brother committed suicide last weekend by overdosing on something. He was found with headphones on, presumably listening to something. This is his youtube account. He made a playlist containing 6 songs that was edited the day he passed. This is one of the 6 songs. With the method he used, he was dead after about 30 minutes, probably unconscious around 12 minutes. I like to think that it was peaceful for him with his music on. I love you Myles, I'll miss you everyday for the rest of my life.

My first job at 17 was at a Burger King . I remember closing up my shift at the store and this song coming on the speakers. It would be 5 pm and I would look up and see my mom waiting in the bench outside for me. We grew up pretty low income and only had one car, which my dad used for work. She would walk from our apartment to my job at the ending of my shift. Afterwards we’d grab some decaf coffee and talk about our day. I’m 30 now and had my son in June. She passed a month later never getting to see him. I miss her so much it hurts, I think about her randomly sometimes and the shock/ pain starts flowing back in. Even though we didn’t have much growing up, her love kept me so happy I didn’t need anything else. Love you Aummi RIP.

The souls that we cherish are the most beautiful the most fragile we see the pain and can't fix it leaving us gasping for air .. My mom died with a beer in one hand and a straw the other dying the way she lived with no boundaries no judgements I see her now laughing among the stars. I'll soon be 78 years young. I have loved this song since it was first released, but I never knew until I viewed the video with captioned lyrics what it was about. The poetic words and gorgeous string instrumentals have always comforted me in some indefineable way. They simply re-orient my thoughts and help ground me in my otherwise directionless life. It's even more significant because it was released the same year my father passed, exactly one week before 9/11, and just 10 months after the death of my dear mother. As the oldest of their three children, I have since lost my youngest brother, and my only child inexplicably shut me out of her life. Thankfully, I am left with this wonderful song to replay in my head in their absence. It's a reminder that they have all transitioned to planes that I can't possibly comprehend, and that I must reconcile that all is well with them out there.

I lost my mom in 2009. I literally fell to my knees when I was told she wasn't going to make it. I spent her last night with my head on her lap just holding her hand. When I thought I was going to lose my little sister to respiratory failure I listened to this song every day and cried myself to sleep. Now I work at that exact same hospital creating hope as they did for me and my family. My 16 year ok’d daughter died in an accident in 1998 when this was still new. I listened to the words and wondered how anyone else could have been so exactly like her that some one could get the words right, so right as this amazing song. My son committed suicide March 12 2020 .. he really love this song his name was Brian Keith Starnes . He's now resting with family I lost Christmas Eve of 2021 . For the people who think I speak fake all you have to do is check the obituary in Carrollton ga . On the date . He was in Carrroll co jail when this happened and only in jail for a day . When the chaplain and the sheriff came to my house I collapsed when I was told . I am still in disbelief that my son would commit suicide he was too full of life . .. rip my son 😢. I dedicate this to my dad, he passed away 3 days ago at the age of 91. The funeral is tomorrow and I was thinking about him and this song popped up on my play list. He was always a sweet and tender man. I always remember him crying after he spanked me, we both cried, just for different reasons. His soul has winged it's way to heaven.
