Françoise Hardy signed her first contract with the record label Vogue in November 1961. In April 1962, shortly after finishing school, her first record Oh Oh Chéri appeared, written by Johnny Hallyday's writing duo. Her own flip side of the record, "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles" became a success, riding the wave of Yé-yé music in France, with two million sales.
Hardy sang in French, English, Italian, Spanish, and German. In 1963 she came fifth for Monaco in the Eurovision Song Contest with "L'amour s'en va". In 1963, she was awarded the Grand Prix Du Disque of the Charles Cros Academy.
In 1981, she married her long-time companion Jacques Dutronc, with whom she had had a son, Thomas Dutronc, in 1973. In 1994, she collaborated with the British pop group Blur for their "La Comedie" version of To The End. In May 2000, she made a comeback with the album Clair Obscur. Her son played guitar and her husband sang the duet "Puisque Vous Partez En Voyage." Iggy Pop and Étienne Daho also took part. Hardy lives near Paris and Dutronc lives in Monticello, Corsica, although they remain a couple.[citation needed]
My Beautiful Demon
Francoise Hardy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The sunshine always burst the cloud
The smell of cut grass fills the sky
Just like the birds of mid July
I remember you in cine film
I fell in love to easily
Sometimes we stayed up through the night
Walked through the streets electric light
[Chorus]
My beautiful demon
My beautiful demon
Flood lit veins and I enhale you
Missing the sweetest ghost
Killed with silence
Feels like I am
Missing the sweetest ghost
I remember you in cine film
The way you ran to catch me out
Do you think about it too
On days like these I think of you
[Chorus]
I remember you in cine film
My beautiful demon
In Françoise Hardy's song My Beautiful Demon, she reminisces about a past lover she still thinks about. The opening lines, "I remember you in cine film, the sunshine always burst the cloud," illustrate the nostalgic, romanticized view she has of this person. The use of "cine film" adds an old-fashioned, dreamy quality, as though she's watching a movie of their time together. The description of "the sunshine always burst the cloud" suggests that even through difficult times, this person brought light and positivity to her life.
Hardy admits that she "fell in love too easily," indicating that their relationship may not have been ideal or lasted long. Despite this, they had moments of magic together, staying up through the night and walking through the city under electric lights. The chorus repeats the phrase "my beautiful demon," which can be interpreted in multiple ways. It could suggest that this person was alluring but destructive in some way, or that they had some inner turmoil that made them complex and fascinating. The line "flood lit veins and I inhale you" plays with the idea of addiction, hinting that even though she knows this person may not be good for her, she can't help but be drawn to them. The line "missing the sweetest ghost, killed with silence" implies that this person is no longer in her life, but their absence still haunts her.
Overall, My Beautiful Demon is a wistful, poetic tribute to a past love. It portrays both the joy and pain of reminiscing on someone who is no longer present. The use of vivid imagery and metaphor creates a dreamlike atmosphere, adding to the sense of nostalgia and longing.
