September Song
Frank Sinatra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was a young man courting the girls
I played me a waiting game
If a maid refused me with tossing curls
I'd let the old Earth take a couple of whirls
While I plied her with tears in lieu of pearls
And as time came around she came my way
As time came around, she came
When you meet with the young girls early in the Spring
You court them in song and rhyme
They answer with words and a clover ring
But if you could examine the goods they bring
They have little to offer but the songs they sing
And the plentiful waste of time of day
A plentiful waste of time

Oh, it's a long, long while from May to December
But the days grow short when you reach September
When the autumn weather turns the leaves to flame
One hasn't got time for the waiting game

Oh, the days dwindle down to a precious few
September, November

And these few precious days I'll spend with you
These precious days I'll spend with you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Frank Sinatra's song September Song tell a story of a young man's journey through courtship and love as he muses on the passing of time. The song is a reflection on the passage of time and how it affects love and relationships. The singer tells of his youth and how he used to play a waiting game when courting girls. If a girl rejected him, he would wait patiently for her to change her mind. Eventually, time would pass, and she would come around, and they would be together. The refrain of the song, "As time came around, she came," emphasizes the idea of time's powerful impact on love.

The second verse talks about how young men court young girls in the spring. They sing and rhyme, and the girls respond with clover rings. However, the singer suggests that these offerings are superficial and that there is little substance to the relationships. The lyrics describe it as a "plentiful waste of time of day," which suggests that the relationships are idle and unproductive.

The final verse speaks to the inevitability of the passing of time. The days grow shorter as one reaches September, and the autumn weather turns. The singer acknowledges that time is precious and that he will spend the remaining days with his loved one. The song conveys a message about the fleeting nature of time and the value of love and relationships.

on The Lady Is A Champ

eight

She gets too hungry for dinner at eight
She can't eat late and stay up all night, because unlike society types, she has to get up in the morning.

She likes the theatre and never comes late
She cares more about seeing the play than being seen making an entrance.

She never bothers with people she'd hate
Her friends are friends, not social trophies.

Doesn't like crap games with barons or earls
While barrns and earls probably don't play craps, she associates with friends, not people to be seen with.

Won't go to Harlem in ermine and pearls
She doesn't "slum", the practice of the rich in the 30's, when the song was written, of touring poor neighborhoods dressed in rich clothes to "tut, tut" about the deplorable conditions, and congratulate each other for "caring about the poor"

Won't dish the dirt with the rest of the girls
Doesn't trade gossip for acceptance among an in-crowd

She likes the free, fresh wind in her hair
She cares more about how her hair feels than conforming with current hair fashions

Hates California, it's cold and it's damp
Since most of California is noticeably warmer and / or drier than New York, where the play the song was written for is set, this is probably a facetious excuse to like what she likes.

And she won't go to Harlem in Lincoln's or Ford's
Another reference to slumming, but facetious, since Lincolns and Fords were middle-class, not luxury brands when the lyric was written

on Try a Little Tenderness

Here are the correct lyrics

Try A Little Tenderness - Frank Sinatra - Lyrics

Oh she may be weary
Women do get wearied
Wearing that same old shabby dress
And when she’s weary
You try a little tenderness

You know she’s waiting
Just anticipating things she’ll may never possess
While she is without them
Try just a little bit of tenderness

It’s not just sentimental
She has her grieve and her care
And the words that soft and gentle
Makes it easier to bear
You wont regret it
Women don't forget it
Love is their whole happiness
And it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness

Musical Interlude

And, it’s all so easy
Try a little tenderness
