It All Belongs to Me
Frank Trumbauer and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It all comes back to me now,
A starry summer sky,
A laughing you and I, alone.
It all comes back to me now,
A sea of midnight blue,
Your face uplifted to my own.

We called it a thrill of the moment,
And blamed the moon up above,
We didn't know what the glow meant,
We never dreamed it might be love.
It all comes back to me now,
The love I threw away,

And now each lonely night I pray,
That it will all come back to me someday.

Overall Meaning

In the song "It All Belongs to Me," Frank Trumbauer and His Orchestra reminisce about a past romantic relationship that ended. The opening lines are a nostalgic recollection of a beautiful moment shared under a starry summer sky with a now-absent partner, vividly describing the setting as "a sea of midnight blue" with the partner's face "uplifted to [the singer's] own." The first verse is a wistful remembrance of the innocence and joy of that shared moment.

The second verse commemorates the couple's naivety at the time, painting a picture of two young lovers swept up in the passion of the moment and blissfully ignorant of the true depth of their feelings. They "called it a thrill of the moment" and "blamed the moon up above," never imagining that their dalliance could evolve into something more significant. The singer ultimately regrets the choices that led to the loss of this love and longs for a chance to recapture those feelings. The song concludes with the bittersweet hope that the memories of the past will return and bring back what was lost.

My name is Tyler Trumbauer. Frankie was my great grandfather. This makes me happy! Thank you!

@nickdellow6073

Very pleased and thanks for your comment. Do you have any original photos of your great grandfather?

@KCWeapon

Nick Dellow A lot of music/photos/items that belonged to Frankie are now kept here in Kansas City at the UMKC school of music. My family has been sending them almost everything we have so they can preserve it forever. I believe it’s all public...or will be at some point.

@nickdellow6073

@@KCWeapon Thanks - very glad that everything is being preserved for future generations. I do recall seeing some early photos of Frank at the UMKC website, and also Bennie Moten and Count Basie, etc.

Your great Grandfather will always have a place in jazz. May he rest in peace. I was always sadden about how sad he was when Bixie died...

@muxant_academy

your grandfather is legend of jazz music history.

I don't think Eddie Lang has got enough credit for the amazing part he plays throughout this recording.

@gregoryphillips760

Lester Young brought me here. ‘Prez’ is my favorite saxophonist and I can definitely hear some of the elements in Frankie’s playing that influenced him.

@jonathanmerrill8088

My father was heavily into Dixieland when he was in college, and he considered this record to be the best recording ever made

@lesterwyoung

I would more and more be tending to agree with your father.
