The Half of It Dearie Blues
Fred Astaire Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Each time you trill a song with Bill or look at Will
I get a chill, I'm gloomy
I won't recall the names of all the men who fall
It's all appalling to me
Of course, I really cannot blame them a bit
For you're a hit where're you flit
I know it's so, but dearie, oh!
You'll never know the blues that go right through me
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
The trouble is you have so many from whom to choose
If you should marry Tom, Dick, or harry,
Life would be the bunk, I'd become a monk
I've got the you-don't know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!

To Bill and Ben I'd pay attention now and then
But really men would bore me
When I'd begun to think I'd run and be a nun
I met the one man for me
And now just when the sun is starting to beam
Along comes a girl, zip goes a dream!
What will I do away from you?
I feel the future will be blue and stormy
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
It may be my heart isn't broken, but there's a bruise.
Through you I've known some days that were lonesome
Though you say that i'm flirting all the time
I've got the you-don-t know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!

I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues
Oh, how i wish you'd drop an anchor and end your cruise
You're just a duffer who makes me suffer

All the younger set says your heart's to let
I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!

Overall Meaning

In the song "The Half Of It Dearie Blues," Fred Astaire laments about his unrequited love for a woman who is constantly pursued by other men. The lyrics express Fred's sadness and jealousy towards the woman's attention towards other men, and how he feels that he could never be the one to win her heart. He recognizes that he cannot blame her for being popular and desired, but he still wishes that she could see how much he cares for her. Fred imagines a future without her and feels that it would be lonely and unhappy, hence 'You'll never know the blues that go right through me.'

The second verse describes how Fred believed he had found the one man for him, only to have his hopes crushed by the arrival of another woman. He again feels that he will be alone and unhappy without the woman's affection. The chorus repeats Fred's feelings of jealousy and sadness towards the woman's choices in love and ending with 'I've got the you-don't-know-the-half-of-it-dearie blues!'

Overall, the song expresses the sadness and longing of unrequited love and Fred Astaire's talent in conveying powerful emotions through his lyrics and vocals.

Great piano and a super vocal from Fred Astaire - a far better singer than given credit for - his phrasing here is superb - I love how we have to imagine Fred dancing

@Inderneil Bose Roy Chowdhury thanks for listening and for your comment. When I was a kid I played kazoo and sang with my own kids band imitation of the Mound City Blue Blowers. We were so bad parents asked us to play at birthday parties to get the kids to go home. When I started to sing everybody left. I am so fortunate there were no cell phones back then to record me. The last thing I would want would be that one of our performances showed up on YouTube and everybody laughing at my singing and kazoo playing.
