On s'éclaterait vraiment, si j'étais président

The song ‘Si J'étais Président,’ which was written by the French artist Gérard Lenorman in 1980, speaks of a little boy waiting for him at the entrance of the artists. The boy requests a magical phrase from Lenorman, and the artist replies with the phrase “if I were President.” He continues by describing his imagined dreamland if he were President of the Republic, where there would be no sad children, and the government officials would be Disney cartoon characters.
The song continues with Lenorman describing how he would handle his duties in a unique and different way, such as writing his speeches in verse and holding council meetings as picnics. He goes further to suggest that the Diplomatic Corps would meet at a disco club to discuss diplomatic matters, and there would be no more wars but only fantastic musical performances. The song ends with Lenorman announcing that he will never be the President of the Republic, but that he still loves children.
The chorus contains repetition of the phrase ‘Si J’étais Presidente,' which appears in different variations throughout the song, and provides the inspiration for the song's title. The song was widely acclaimed in France, and its popularity continued in 2006 when it became the anthem for a political politician, who later lost the presidential election. Some critics see the song as a political or social commentary, while others view it as a child's fantasy.
