Ok but also, Gen 7, USUM only, because SM is essentially just worse USUM in most aspects. Except for climax. Lusamine going batshit is fucking great. Imo, better than Ultra Necrozma.

Back on track, how does USUM itself hold up? It’s always Gen 4 v Gen 5 but I actually really like Gen 7. Yes, I know about the whole, cutscene problem. That’s understandable. But overall, how good is it really? Or how bad?

Keep in mind, I’m somewhat biased since it was my first game after skipping gens 5 and 6, only playing them afterwards.

In my opinion, USUM stands right before Gen 5. With Gen 4 coming after. I agree with the person above me. The music is piano personified and the story is kinda slow.

USUM is kinda slow story-wise, but the climax for both games is worth it (once again, in my opinion). And the music is self explanatory. Some of, if not, the best Pokémon music.

I know right?
Gen 5 is almost constantly judged by the quality of the 'mons rather then the quality of the story or game itself. People rarely play it without the mindset of "this is the worst generation" being ever present.
No pokemon game with have an amazingly deep and complex story, it's a kids game, after all. But gen 5s story is the closest we will probably ever get to something deep and complex. Obviously, all of it isn't obvious, considering the target audience, but its clear when you look for it. The music is probably the best example of this. But no one takes the time to consider these games because of a few bad designs.
And when it comes to people saying gen 4 is the best, I really think that's just the nostalgia clouding their judgement, and gen 4 is one of, if not my favourite gen. I've recently replayed gen 5 and 4, and honestly? Black and white, as well as their remakes, were way better when it comes to story and writing.

Even playing platinum, the characters, story and progression isn't all that great. The music is far from being better then anything in gen 5, and the characters don't strike the same feeling. In gen 5 you are actively encouraged to hate team plasma, and especially Ghetsis. But in sinnoh, there isn't anything that team galactic does to make the player actively hate them - the 'reveal' of Cyrus' real intentions isn't as intense and surprising as Ghetsis'.

I could go on about how people compare the two gens, but I'd be here all day. I don't hate either of them, but I don't particularly like them either. They both have flaws, it's just gen 5 does better at hiding them. I really feel as though the only reason people hate these games is because of certain pokemon designs, rather then anything else. And there are more good designs then the bad ones.

Besides, even if you reading this find gen 5 absolutely horrible and irredeemable, at least we can (hopefully) agree that sword and shield are a lot worse and need more then just the dlcs to improve them.

bedtime for bonzo

It would be a great idea to put this in one of the most terrifying examples of innocence being corrupted and rate it... wait for it....

Bagel Rider

it's destroyed, but i'd argue it's destroyed in an even sadder way

i think the reason seeing the room makes n so uncomfortable that he has to walk out is that this room represents everything about n's childhood and how ghetsis raised him - we're told in b/w that it was the world provided to him by ghetsis, which is chilling because it's literally a child's playroom, and we know n was specifically sheltered and forced to see the worst of humanity through what they did to pokemon so he'd grow to want to liberate pokemon and gain the willpower to become the hero

that lie was torn apart for n at the end of b/w when he finally saw who ghetsis was and what his intentions were, and with alder's encouragement and the protag it ultimately set n on a much better path and saved him, and by the time of b2/w2 he's come a long way and seen that humans and pokemon can co-exist

before the end of black and white, it was still what n considered his beloved room, but by this point, n can see the room and the oddly childlike decor for what it is - it was basically a prison he was kept in to keep him innocent and malleable, and it represents the life he spent believing a close-minded lie

the room was n's childhood, if not his entire life up until the first games, and even after all his growth, the pain seeing it brings him's too traumatic for the poor guy to be comfortable standing in it for as much as a minute - his whole childhood has been destroyed for him, and the room being in the state it is here just represents that
