Alex
Girls Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Well who cares?
No, I don't
If somebody somewhere cries
Well who cares?
No, you don't
And Alex has a band
If somebody somewhere dies
Well who cares?
No, you don't
Alex has black hair
And who cares?
Well, I do
You've got a lovely smile
I could spend a while with that smile
And Alex has a boyfriend
Oh well, I'm in hell
I'll sing you a song
Would you listen to a lover's song?
Would you hold my hand?
I'm as cold as the snow
If you said let's go
I would follow
Could you fall in love?
Well who cares about love?
Could we run away?
Anywhere, anyway, only you
Anywhere, anyway, only you
Anywhere, anyway, only you
Anywhere, anyway, only you
Anywhere, anyway, only you
The song Alex by Girls was released in 2009 and is a melancholy ballad about unrequited love. The opening lyrics "Alex has blue eyes, well who cares?" sets the tone for the song. The singer doesn't care about Alex's physical traits, but then admits to caring about his black hair and lovely smile. The contradictory feelings suggest that the singer is trying to convince himself that he doesn't care about Alex, but is struggling to suppress his emotions.
The singer then brings up the topic of war and dying, suggesting that love is more important than such trivial matters. The line "Alex has a band, so who cares about war?" seems to indicate that the singer believes Alex's music is a more worthy cause than fighting in wars. The chorus repeats the sentiment that neither the singer nor Alex care about other people's suffering, but the emotional turmoil of their own unrequited love.
The second verse reveals that Alex has a boyfriend, and the singer confesses his jealousy and misery. He offers to sing Alex a lover's song and asks if he will hold his hand. Despite his metaphorical coldness, he is willing to follow Alex anywhere if he would just accept his love. The song ends with a repetition of "Anywhere, anyway, only you", emphasizing the singer's focus on his love for Alex.
