It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #6. Knight's third solo album, "Good Woman" was released in 1991 on MCA Records (now Geffen Records). The album quickly climbed the charts to #1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The album features the lead single, "Men" (#2 R&B). Her fourth album, "Just For You" followed in 1995. The album went Gold. Knight most recent album is her critically acclaimed ninth studio album, "Before Me", released in 2006.
Just A Closer Walk With Thee
Gladys Knight Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'll be satisfied as long, as I walk, let me walk, close to thee
Just a closer walk with thee, grant it Jesus, is my plea
Daily walking close to thee, let it be, dear lord, let it be
Thro' this world of toil and snares, if I falter Lord, who cares
Who with me my burdens share, none but thee, dear Lord, none but thee
When my feeble life is o'er, time for me will be no more
Guide me gently, safely o'er, to thy kingdom shore, to thy shore
The lyrics of Gladys Knight's song, "Just A Closer Walk With Thee," reflect the singer's desire to have a closer relationship with Jesus. The opening lines, "I am weak but Thou are strong," reveal that the singer is acknowledging her own limitations and is seeking the guidance of Jesus to protect her from doing wrong. The verses also express the singer's longing to stay close to Jesus while walking through life's various challenges, stating, "I'll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to Thee."
The refrain of the song, "Just a closer walk with thee, grant it Jesus, is my plea," repeated throughout the song, highlights the singer's ardent desire to be closer to Jesus. The lyrics further underscore the idea that the singer wants to walk alongside Jesus daily and stay nearby to avoid temptation or becoming led astray by worldly desires.
The second verse begins with the lines "Thro' this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord who cares. Who with me my burdens share, none but thee, dear Lord, none but thee." Those words show the singer's recognition of life's trials and tribulations she may face, and how only Jesus can help her bear those burdens. Finally, the last verse, "When my feeble life is o'er, time for me will be no more, guide me gently, safely o'er, to thy kingdom shore, to thy shore," demonstrates the artist's belief in an eternal life after death, and how she hopes to arrive at Jesus' kingdom's shore after living her life on Earth.
