The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Someone to hold you too close
Someone to hurt you too deep
Someone to sit in you chair
To ruin your sleep
Someone to need you too much
Someone to know you too well
To put you through hell
Someone you have to let in
Someone whose feelings you spare
Someone who, like it or not
Will want you to share
A little, a lot
Someone to crowd you with love
Someone to force you to care
Someone to make you come through
Who'll always be there
As frightened as you
Of being alive
Being alive
Being alive
Being alive!
Somebody hold me too close
Somebody hurt me too deep
Somebody sit in my chair
And ruin my sleep
And make me aware
Of being alive
Being alive
Somebody need me too much
Somebody know me too well
Somebody pull me up short
And put me through hell
And give me support
For being alive
Make me alive
Make me alive
Make me confused
Mock me with praise
Let me be used
Vary my days
But alone
Is alone
Not alive
Somebody crowd me with love
Somebody force me to care
Somebody let me come through
I'll always be there
As frightened as you
To help us survive
Being alive
Being alive
Being alive!
In Glee Cast's song "Being Alive," Kurt sings about the importance of having someone close to you, even if that relationship can be difficult at times. The song's lyrics describe how having someone to care for and be cared by is essential for being truly alive. Someone who can hold you too close or hurt you too deep also has the ability to make you feel truly alive. It can be someone who knows you too well, someone who challenges you to come through, and someone who mocks you with praise. All of these experiences, though difficult, make life worth living.
Through his lyrics, Kurt is expressing that human connections are both messy and beautiful. It is not always easy to open up to someone else or trust them with our hearts, but doing so is necessary for true connection and growth. The song also acknowledges how frightening and vulnerable it can be to let someone in, but it is a risk worth taking to be fully alive.
Overall, "Being Alive" is a touching and introspective song about the importance of human connection for a fulfilling life. It encourages listeners to embrace all of life's challenges, including difficult relationships, because they are what makes us truly alive.

Glee introduced me to sooo many broadway songs. And I think Kurt's voice was truly made for broadway. Love this performance. His singing was so effortless. Chris Colfer should make a broadway cover album.

June Yamagata Exactly the same for me. I knew about the most popular Broadway musicals but thanks to Glee I learned a lot more! I just happened to see that exact song on the 2007 Tony Awards and it gave me chills, just like Kurt did it.
