Dancing On My Own
Glee Cast Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way, I close my eyes and he has found me

In the rain
The pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere the streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day, I'm learning
All my life, I've only been pretending
Without me, his world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness that I have never known

I love him
I love him

I love him
But only on my own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Dancing On My Own" by the Glee Cast explore themes of loneliness, unrequited love, and the power of imagination to fill emotional voids.

The song begins with the singer expressing their sense of isolation and longing. They are pretending that the person they love is by their side, but in reality, they are alone. This person is their source of comfort and support, and without them, the singer feels lost. However, in their mind, they can envision this person's presence, and it provides them with solace.

The second verse paints a picture of a rainy night, where the world around the singer seems transformed. The rain evokes a melancholic atmosphere, and the lights and reflections on the pavement create an ethereal scene. The trees are described as being filled with starlight, which symbolizes the everlasting bond between the singer and the person they love. In this imaginary world, it feels like it's just the two of them, forever entwined.

Yet, the singer acknowledges that this connection only exists in their mind. They are aware that they are talking to themselves and not actually communicating with the person they love. They also recognize that this person is unable to reciprocate their feelings, as they are blind to their love. Despite this, the singer still believes that there is a way for them to be together.

The bridge of the song highlights the intense love the singer feels for this person. They admit that when the night ends, so does their connection. The world becomes cold and strange without them, and the singer is left feeling incomplete. They understand that their love is unrequited, and yet they cannot stop loving this person. Every day is a lesson in navigating this unattainable love. It is a perpetual cycle of pretending and longing.

In conclusion, "Dancing On My Own" delves deep into the emotions of loneliness, unrequited love, and the power of the imagination to provide comfort in the absence of the person we desire. It portrays the singer's longing for a love that can never be fully realized and the bittersweet reality of living in a world where their love remains unreciprocated. Despite the pain, they still hold onto their love, finding solace and refuge in their own thoughts.

I found the script that goes with this song : "4x13"

Brittany closes her locker and starts to walk away from sam

Sam :wait are you upset about santana being back again? She's just trying to get in your head and manipulate you.

Brittany : I'm very confused Sam. This is worse than the time my parents forgot me at sears and I had to spend a night in a dryer. I mean, is it even possible to love more than one person at the same time
this hurts sam
Brittany : look at every diva who ever lived they all have six week flings with younger men, get face lifts, then put out a hit record and tour. All things I should be doing now.

Sam:will you stop? Talk to me.
Brittany :I'm sorry I can't. The cheerios are waiting for their cue.

Song begins

Up in the bleachers are Sam and santana. They exchange icy glares as britt trys to prove she needs no one

We barely ever got to see Britt's POV of her relationship with Santana. This literally depicts perfectly how she must've felt in Season 4 but yeah it was always pointless to expect the writers to do Brittana justice

Agnes Sofia Castro Carvalho

@Mo , i think it had to do with the writers because they weren't planned to end up together at this point. Their break-up was supposed to be for good

Mo

@Agnes Sofia Castro Carvalho I don't know, but they already had problems with them kissing so... who knows!

Agnes Sofia Castro Carvalho

@Mo what problem the network could have with this song?

Agnes Sofia Castro Carvalho

@Mo what the hell? What happens in that scene?

Mo

I'm not sure it's the writers the problem, I think it's more the network. If they recorded that song, it means it was originally planned to have that scene. And we know that there is a whole discussion between Santana and Brittany in the breakup episode that was cut (or maybe not even filmed) but that was in the script.

So instead of having a scene with this song, in 4x13 "DIVA" we get:
-Tina vaporaping Blaine
-Finn kissing Emma
-Rachel being an egomaniac in the first half of the episode and mopey in the second half
They couldn't spare like 2 minutes for this, really?

alyssa Davidson

I wish they did a scene of her dancing to this and watching santana being all jelly

River Anderson

they definitely should’ve removed finn kissing emma, made no sense and it was just the writers ruining finn’s character after he was getting better

Cláudia Pereira

Ok so I came back here because Heather said that Brittany was going to sing and dance this song alone in the choir room with alot of mirrors around her...I WANT TO SEE THAT SO BADLY
