The cast is second behind The Beatles for most chart appearances by a group act in the Billboard Hot 100's history, and holds the record of sixth overall among all artists, with sixty-nine appearances. The cast has sold over thirty six million and over eleven million albums worldwide. The series' cover versions have also had a positive effect on the original recording artists, with sales of Rihanna's "Take a Bow" increasing by 189 percent after the song was covered in the Glee episode "Showmance".
The series features covers of numerous songs sung on-screen by the characters. Musical segments typically take the form of performances, as opposed to the characters singing spontaneously, as the intention is for the series to remain reality-based. Murphy is responsible for selecting all of the songs used, and strives to maintain a balance between show tunes and chart hits, as: "I want there to be something for everybody in every episode. That's a tricky mix, but that's very important — the balancing of that." Song choices are integral to script development, with Murphy explaining: "Each episode has a theme at its core. After I write the script, I will choose songs that help to move the story along."
Glee is choreographed by Zach Woodlee, and features five to eight production numbers per episode. Once music rights are cleared, songs are arranged and pre-recorded by the cast. Woodlee constructs the accompanying dance moves, which are then taught to the cast and filmed. Numbers can take several weeks to prepare, depending on complexity. Each episode costs at least $3 million to produce, and can take up to 10 days to film as a result of the elaborate choreography.

Pretending that you're, oh, so shy
I'm a natural man doin' all I can
My temperature is runnin' high
Friday night no one in sight
And we got so much to share
Talkin's fine if you got the time
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch me there? Where?
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch me there?
Where? There, yeah,
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Every girl and boy needs a little joy
All you do is sit and stare
Beggin' on my knees, baby won't you please
Run your fingers through' my hair
My my my whiskey and rye
Don't it make you feel so fine?
Right or wrong, don't it turn you on?
Can't you see we're wastin' time? Yeah
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch me there? Where?
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch? Yeah
Do you wanna touch me there?
Where? There, yeah
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Do ya, do ya?
Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah
Do ya, do ya?
Do you wanna touch?
Do you wanna touch me there?
Do you wanna touch?
Do you wanna touch?
Do you wanna touch me there?
My, my, my
Do you wanna touch me there?
One, two touch me
Come on yeah you know you wanna do it
Touch me there, yeah
My, my and touch me
My, my, my, my, yeah, yeah
Touch me there, you know where
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah oh yeah, oh yeah
You know where, yeah, yeah
The lyrics to "Do You Wanna Touch Me" by Glee Cast Feat. Gwyneth Paltrow Kevin McHale Amber Riley suggest a seductive invitation to touch. The opening verse paints a picture of an unspoken frustration in a relationship where one party is pretending to be shy but the other is losing patience. The chorus repeatedly asks the partner if they want to touch and makes it clear that the singer is ready and willing. The second verse continues with a plea for physical contact as the singer begs for their partner to run their fingers through their hair. The lyrics suggest that the tension has been building for some time and it's time to take things to the next level.
The song was originally written by Gary Glitter and Mike Leander and was released in 1973. The Glee Cast version featuring Gwyneth Paltrow Kevin McHale Amber Riley was released in 2011. The song gained further notoriety when it was covered by Joan Jett in 1982. While the lyrics clearly suggest a sexual invitation, the message is not without controversy as Gary Glitter (real name Paul Gadd) has been convicted of multiple vile offenses and sentenced to prison. This fact caused many radio stations to stop playing the song.
