Goldenhorse's debut album Riverhead was released in October 2002. Over the following 18 months, various singles from the album started to be played on the radio and the band played live throughout New Zealand. Sales of the record climbed slowly then steadily and in August 2004 the album reached no.1 on the NZ national charts.
"Out of the Moon" was released in 2005. "Reporter" was released in 2007.
The band has not said it has split; the time-out is described as a hiatus with Morrell releasing a solo album in 2010 and King debuting Grand Rapids in 2011.

Spice Islands
Goldenhorse Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The Indian lovers' spice
From the Spice Islands
From the Spice Islands
Tomorrow late I'll find
The beautiful violet light
In the Spice Islands
'Cos when the river drowns
When the river drowns
You're safe in knowing that your village is over
Tomorrow late I'll buy
The Indian lovers' spice
From the Spice Islands
From the Spice Islands
Tomorrow late I might
Walk through the red desert sand
Walk the whole distance then
Slip through this silent land
'Cos when the river drowns
When the river drowns
You're safe in knowing that your village is over
The lyrics of Goldenhorse's "Spice Islands" describe a journey to the Spice Islands, a group of islands in Indonesia known for their spices. The singer plans to buy Indian lovers' spice, possibly referring to the spice known as "love grass," which is said to have aphrodisiac qualities. The song also references finding "the beautiful violet light," which could refer to a natural phenomenon such as the northern lights or aurora borealis.
The lyrics take on a somber tone with the lines "when the river drowns, you're safe in knowing that your village is over." This could allude to the danger of living near a river prone to flooding or a metaphorical river representing the passing of time and change. The singer seems to be seeking refuge in the Spice Islands, perhaps to escape some difficult situation.
Overall, the lyrics of "Spice Islands" paint a picture of a journey full of sensory experiences and hint at the possibility of finding solace in a faraway place.
