They formed in 1999. Their first release was Vuelvo Al Sur/El Capitalismo Foráneo in 2000, followed by the album La Revancha del Tango in 2001. Their music is clearly tango, but also uses electronic elements such as samples, beats and breaks.
Live material was broadcast on Gilles Peterson's world music show Worldwide on BBC one in May 2004. Philippe Cohen Solal has also released a DJ set: Inspiracion, Espiracion (P. Cohen Solal DJ Mix) (2004). This album is a compilation of classic tangos from the likes of Anibal Troilo and Astor Piazzolla and Gotan Project remixes. The album also includes a bonus CD with the track La Cruz del Sur - which was meant to be included on La Revancha del Tango, but didn't make the cut in 2001.
Their last album Tango 3.0 was released on April 19, 2010.
The name of the trio comes from a form of wordplay very common in Rioplatense Spanish's argot named vesre. This wordplay involves the reversal of syllables. Thus, the word 'Tan-go' becomes 'Go-tan', the name the trio have chosen for their project.

Gotan Project Lyrics

Para cada despertar
Un jardín de pan y de poesía
Porque puestos a soñar
Fácil es imaginar
Esta humanidad en armonía
En la posibilidad
De encontrar un rumbo diferente
Para abrir de par en par
Los cuadernos del amor
Del gauchaje y de toda la gente
Qué bueno che, qué lindo es
Reírnos como hermanos
Porqué esperar para cambiar
De murga y de compás
The lyrics to Gotan Project's song Diferente speak of a hope for a better world, one where there is a place for every person to wake up and where there is a garden of bread and poetry. The song highlights the power of dreams and the ease with which we can imagine a world that is in harmony. The singer's mind is filled with excitement at the possibility of finding a different path, one that opens up the notebooks of love, of the "gauchaje" (Argentinian cowboys), and of all people.
The lyrics communicate a strong sense of community and brotherhood, as the singer muses on the joy of laughing together like siblings. There is a call to action in the song, a plea to not wait to change, to let go of old ways and embrace new rhythms. The repetition of "qué bueno che, qué lindo es" (how good it is, how beautiful it is) emphasizes the singer's delight in imagining a world that is different and better.
Overall, the lyrics to Diferente are optimistic and uplifting, urging listeners to embrace change and a new way of being.

“There will be a place in the world
for each awakening.
A garden of bread and of poetry,
Because if we really dream
it is easy to imagine
this Humanity in harmony.
Mi mind "vibrates" when it thinks
of the possibility of finding a different path
to open widely the notebooks of love,
of the gaucho men and of all people.
How good “che”, how nice it is to laugh like brothers!!!
Why wait? to change of “murga” and of beat!!!"
Vibrates: gets excited
Che: argentine way to say Hey you!!
