Tema Amores Perros
Gustavo Santaolalla Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Tu eres mi ala que siempre he buscado

Acaso sera para siempre has olvidado

Tus amores perros me van a matar

Sin haberme dado siquiera
Un poco de felicidad

Overall Meaning

The first few lines of Gustavo Santaolalla's Tema Amores Perros describe a deeply committed relationship where both partners feel they have finally found what they had been searching for all along. The singer says, "You are my wing that I have always sought. He told me one day and I smiled satisfied, and confident that ours is the truth." The two are so sure of their love that they believe nothing could ever separate them.

However, as the song progresses, doubts begin to arise. The singer reveals that the promise of forever made that one day is slowly being eroded by the passing of time, "What was said is being slowly eaten by the sun, near the sea they embark on eternity." The use of the word "eternity" suggests that while the couple may have believed their love would last forever, it may not be so. The final lines of the song are the most telling, where the singer laments that they are slowly being killed by their "dog-like loves" which have not brought them happiness, "Because your dog-like loves are going to kill me, without even giving me happiness. Your dog-like loves are going to kill me, without even giving me a little bit of happiness."

Overall, the song is a lament about the futility and potential pain caused by an all-consuming love that may not lead to happiness in the end.
