The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").
Something to Tell You

I was in for a heavy one when I could feel you pull away
On the way down, it was too much to take
Even though I tried, it was never enough for running in the same damn place
But I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
'Cause in the end, I was innocent, I was innocent
But you could never say it first
I know you're hurt
Tell me how you feel, tell me how you feel
'Cause I got something to tell you, but I don't know why
It's so hard to let you know that we're not seeing eye to eye
Because I know if I tell you that everything's alright
Oh, we could stay in this moment, I'd never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
Heavy was the sound I could not lift
I could run for a million miles and never get away from it
But knowing that now, I couldn't be content
Even when it was looking up for us, it was difficult to pretend
But I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
'Cause in the end, I was innocent, I was innocent
I let you know that it's no good
But you could never say it first
I know you're hurt
Tell me how you feel, tell me how you feel
'Cause I got something to tell you, but I don't know why
It's so hard to let you know that we're not seeing eye to eye
Because I know if I tell you that everything's alright
Oh, we could stay in this moment, I'd never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
'Cause in the end, (I was innocent)
I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
'Cause in the end, baby, (I was innocent)
I never stopped or gave up
I couldn't ever let you go
'Cause in the end, I was innocent, I was innocent
I let you know that it's no good
But you could never say it first
I know you're hurt
Tell me how you feel, tell me how you feel
'Cause I got something to tell you, but I don't know why
It's so hard to let you know that we're not seeing eye to eye
Because I know if I tell you that everything's alright
Oh, we could stay in this moment, I'd never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
But I don't know why
It's so hard to let you know that we're not seeing eye to eye
Because I know if I tell you that everything's alright
Oh, we could stay in this moment, I'd never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
Never say goodbye, never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Oh, I'll never say goodbye
In HAIM's song Something to Tell You, the lyrics describe a situation where the singer is trying to communicate with someone who they have grown distant from. The song represents the struggle to admit to oneself that not everything is as it seems and to communicate that to the other person. The opening lines 'on the way down, a fall from grace' create a sense of a downward spiral, perhaps foreshadowing a difficult situation to come. The chorus 'Cause I got something to tell you, but I don't know why, It's so hard to let you know that we're not seeing eye to eye' almost feels like an admission of guilt or a confession, and this feeling of vulnerability is carried throughout the song. The lyrics convey the difficulties of communication and the struggle to be honest and sincere, especially when feelings are involved.
The lyrics paint a picture of a complicated relationship where both parties are holding back from expressing their true feelings. The line 'But you could never say it first, I know you're hurt' hints at the idea of hurt and betrayal, perhaps due to a relationship or friendship that has gone awry. Despite the difficulties, there's a sense of nostalgia and yearning for a simpler time. The line 'Oh, we could stay in this moment, I'd never say goodbye' feels like a plea to stay in a time and place where everything is still okay, and there is still hope for things to work out.
Overall, Something to Tell You captures the emotional complexity of relationships, the inherent difficulty of communication, and the longing that comes from being apart from someone who was once so close.
