Fable of a Failed Race
Hawkwind Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our legends tell we came from a seed
That traveled at a whirlwind speed
Til it came to rest upon this land
That once was green and is now all sand
That buried us up to our eyes
And made us watchers of the skies
Til the shadow wings came for our sight
And left us to conspire with night.

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Hawkwind's "Fable of a Failed Race" immediately introduce an evocative and enigmatic mythos. The song seems to describe the origin story of a civilization now lost to history and only preserved as legend. According to this lore, the people of this civilization were brought to their new home by a strange force that sounds both natural and otherworldly - a seed that traveled at whirlwind speeds. This seed anchored them to a land that at one point was green, but has since become a desert wasteland.

The second stanza seems to describe the fallout of this shift in habitat. The people of this land have been buried up to their eyes in sand, rendering them helpless, and only able to gaze upward at the sky. It's here that the narrative pivots, as these "watchers of the skies" are visited by "shadow wings," a mysterious force that appears to rob them of their sight. This sudden blindness plunges them into the darkness of the night, leaving them alone with their thoughts. The song seems to imply that these events were the downfall of this once-thriving civilization, and that their descendants now live on only through legends and stories.

A slightly different POV, firstly i have to say both bands are excellent
As Wayne said, theres some turth to that, but im more cynical

Pink Floyd all went to Cambridge University, and came from relatively affluent families who probably knew people who knew people in the record business

Hawkwind mostly came from the streets of London, council estates and working class families, however as Wayne said they also kind of liked the credibility that comes with being "underground"

As for most underrated, i dont necessarily agree with this, there are so many underrated bands i think it would be too hard to pick one as the "most" underrated

My further recommendation is, look up the band Gong and the band Ozric Tentacles
While each of these bands are different to Hawkwind (or Pink Floyd) there is also some crossover
Also if you can find the Hawkwind Album "Travellers Aid Trust" for other bands they used to do the free festivals with

Enjoy the voyage of discovery

Hawkwind sounds so much better than Pink Floyd ! Then I am asking myself : why does have Pink Floyd so much more success ? Hawkwind is in my opinion one of the most underrated bands ever, maybe not in England, but I am talking about the other European countries.
