Hella began in 2001 in Sacramento, USA as a two member band consisting of Z… Read Full Bio ↴Hella began in 2001 in Sacramento, USA as a two member band consisting of Zach Hill and Spencer Seim writing technically intricate music of a highly spastic nature. They play a blend of math rock and noise rock. On early albums, the band forged their classic sound, playing minimally arranged, abrasive instrumentals that still retain an idiosyncratic sense of melody.

In 2005, the band expanded their live band by adding Dan Elkan on vocals, rhythm guitar, and synth and Jonathan Hischke on bass guitar. In 2006, Hella's line-up was expanded to include Hill's cousin, Josh Hill (guitar), Spencer's Advantage bandmate Carson McWhirter (bass) and Aaron Ross (Vocals).

Since 2009, Hella's lineup is back to the original two-piece of Zach Hill and Spencer Seim, and in August of 2011 they released their latest album, Tripper, on Sargent House.

These guys are amazing. I saw them (when just a two-piece) a few years ago. Zach is a MACHINE on the drums.... played for an hour straight with almost no break and just destroyed shit, including my ego! They are really nice guys too. Very humble.

Aaron Ross is in the video - he's the barber with the razor blade. Other members of Hella also appear: Spencer Seim is the main character (long hair and beard), Zach Hill is the one about to have his eyeball sliced, and Josh Hill is the remaining character (slight beard). The missing member of Hella - Carson McWhirter - was on holiday when they shot the video.

By the way, to anyone ACTUALLY wondering what the meter is, the verses are mostly in 4/4, 4/4, 4/4, 2/4, with the chorus in 10/4, 7/4. The bridge starting at 2:30 is in 4/4, albeit a VERY jumpy. The next part, starting around 4:00 is 7/4. Then there's the verse and chorus. Great meters, I dig it completely.

This song has too many poly rhythms to count the meter for each part. It's mostly in 4. At the end of each line in the verse there's 2 extra beats so you can say 6/4. The chorus is in 6/8 except for right before it repeats, the last measure is 5/8. Then that weird melodic part is in 7/8 while the drums are playing a 5/8 beat. I'm sure the band hasn't even gone this deep into talking about the time signatures.

@DamionSpoon Oh totally! I mean he's unbelievably creative, and has a mad heel/toe. But I think the sloppiness comes with the genre, and even then I'm still impressed at how consistent he is with the parts he writes.

@Kelavmeister Ok, you're right, I should have said "one of". He's my favorite for sure. Admittedly he could be more dynamically diverse and he can get a bit sloppy sometimes, but those rhythms he plays are incredible. And his footwork is even more impressive when you take into account that he just uses a single kick pedal.

This is great -- even outstanding -- but the changes the band must make to accommodate the vocals takes it too far away from the insanity of the superior two piece format, in my humble opinion. The guitars suffer the most here, in my opinion. Very standard stuff now.

regardless of the many many bands zach is in, hella is his best imo. and speaking of mars volta, i heard zach covered drums for omar's solo album. Does anyone know anything about this? and why didnt pridgen do it, cause hes a great drummer as well.

@CheffMLG I'm not saying just that, I know that, but the fact that they always seem to be paying close enough attention to each other that even at times when either of them get a little muddled, or a tiny bit ahead or behind in time, they still follow each other. Their cohesiveness is impressive... Not to say they still aren't innovative, because the way they use odd-times is sick.

this is originality in its purest form. and the vocals .....well i would say cedric sings falsetto........the singing on 666 is not even singing its like some voice channeled from a distant planet by a kid trapped in a box of chocolate milk. i love TMV and HELLA equally ......they sound nothing alike. but hey....to each his own.....now live in the moment.

Zach hill and Spencer agree thou that Theres no 666 in Outer Space has probably been their best collaberation (according to a interview). Personallly im a fan of Hold Your Horse Is. :P

@Colenelly Well, they don't generally keep track of their time signatures, but actually most bands do "sit there and go '1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3....". Generally, Hella takes a more...- I wanna say 'punk'? - approach to math rock, by sort of not caring about the theoretical portion and just doing what they feel. But most bands do know what parts are in what time signature.

@Colenelly they reallyr do know there timing....thats just a joke they have between themselves and lighting bolt...Cuz on music reviews that where negative they always say the dont have timing ...You should really check out there really early stuff,,,and then see the do have a good knowledge of timing ..look for Legs on Earth.... You're message isn't very well indicative of your actual opinion. Because: - You're asking what method they use to memorize pieces, which they do because as you can see from ANY of the live videos they play it the exact way they do on the track -but you say "are you guys aware" which is a condescending note which would typically indicate some sort of pretentious criticism will follow.
